what are those slots for just forward of the gear stick please?

Coin holder (handy for lining up coins before a toll booth ) - or shopping trolley tokens - or salt and pepper sachets from McDonalds!

I missed the CD player transfered tracks onto an sd card. If you decide to do that you need a standard card not a micro card in a carrier card Joe 

I put the swipe card for the work car park in it. 

 

I'm not sure if I still own a functioning CD player.... no disk drive in my car, no disk drive in my laptop, and I only have Bluetooth speakers! 

 

I'd definitely recommend using a USB stick/SD card, or your phone. I use Spotify all the time through Android Auto, it's great.
