Online car tax?

Featured Replies

On the old system if you taxed the car at the wrong time of the month you ended up only getting 11 months tax, as I understood it.

On the new system does this still apply?

If I buy a car on 31st march and tax it online, when will the expiration date be?

Ben,

with all the computer intelligence on systems it ought to be to the day tax registered but no, DVLA / Revenue means to raise extra government revenues, in monthly chunks unfortunately.

Same applies with car tax refunds - complete months left / returned when you sale the car.

Motorist will never be the winner ,that's for sure.

As you say, in this computerized world they cannot manage that.

Clever thing is they can show the exact date it was untaxed from :(

I bought my car on the 26th july & the garage taxed it on my behalf....just checked on the online checker....tax due 1st july 2018. So it looks like ive lost a months tax so the new system is not better for the motorist.I could have waited until the start of august i guess but i wrongly assumed if i tax it online on the 26th then it would be due again on the 26th of the following year.

Need to start an online Government Petition to the Minister of Transport - Treasury conveniently use the latest technology to suit themselves . However the Insurance industry does the right thing by the insurer. So why not the DVLA - honesty. If the energy industry did this the Government would be on their.

Also if the MOT date is fixed inline with date of registration then why not" road fund license. "

I feel a Petition coming on started by Briskoda members.

Noticed this when I sold my old car on 1st March so the payment had just been taken for that month (I paid monthly DD), no refund!  OK it was only around £13 and my Skoda's only £20 per year but it's the principle.  I paid £13 for approximately 17 hours VED.

VED still not RFL.

The Government like things to be a Duty (like Fuel Duty) not the term Tax or licence, then you can Tax any Duty or Licences...

The VED is no longer valid as the Registered Keeper no longer is the Registered Keeper, selling a car etc,

& when ever the Registered Keeper lets the DVLA know.

Odd that the Auto Renewal renews the VED and your Direct Debit of paying that way even if you MOT the car early and the vehicle failed at the MOT.

Car with failed mot which can be failed on a serious safety issue like corrosion, brakes, steering faults can still show as having valid MOT and VED.

Probably will as well after May 2018 and supposedly a stricter MOT system showing a fail on some tested components as 'Dangerous'.

If it was a new car:

" Period of Tax Applied For When completed: Always – A tax disc may normally be taken out for a period of 6 or 12 months. There is no facility for a 6 month tax disc if the 12 month rate of vehicle tax does not exceed £50.00 or the vehicle is exempt from vehicle tax. Additionally, there is the “Date to End of Month” (DEOM) taxing scheme. Tax discs may be taken out for 6 or 12 months plus part of a month, i.e. 1, 2 or 3 weeks. A “DEOM” tax disc will be effective from either: • the 10th of the month (covering the 3-week period prior to the 6 or 12 month period), or • the 17th of the month (covering the 2-week period prior to the 6 or 12 month period), or • the 24th of the month (covering the 1-week period prior to the 6 or 12 month period). The “DEOM” facility may be used to first tax vehicles in all tax classes except those where no vehicle tax is payable. The above dates do apply for the month of February. So can you go online now  (26th March) and tax your vehicle to start from the 1st April, will the tax start from  1st April or 1st March?

I've read some have done this and it back dates to the start of the current month.  To be be sure I'm taxing my other car (currently sorned) on the day I want it to commence, 1st April.
