Low spec 1.2 TSI – no USB or MDI?

Featured Replies

Hi there chums,

I'm a proud new owner of a 2014 Rapid Spaceback 1.2 TSI and so first time poster on here *waves*

It's an ex-taxi so high miles but well serviced and in great nick, but it also appears to be very low spec as I can't seem to find the USB or MDI ports to use as an alternative audio source to the CD player or radio — it's driving me mad!

I've checked the manual and on here and everything is telling me the USB should be in the centre console under the heating controls but there's nothing there, just smooth panels and a place to put loose change.
Then in the glove box, there's a control to turn the passenger airbag off but no MDI port. Also it has no armrest between the two front seats so no USB socket their either.

Finally on the Swing radio, nothing comes up when I hit MEDIA button (other than the rather helpful 'NO MEDIA') so is it possible that this car has no USB or MDI ports at all? I can deal with no Bluetooth but this seems bonkers, even on a 4 year old car...

Any thoughts on where they might be or if this model ever had them at all would be gratefully received. Also, if anyone knows if it's possible to add a USB or MDI input to this car (to play music off my iPhone/iPod etc) that would be amazing...

Thank you!

Phil

If it's not under were you looked (under dash centre) then your model didn't have it from manufacter.

I have a Mazda MX-5 and that didn't have any provision for plugging in extra stuff like phone, BT or USB.  I installed one of those DAB units that plug into a 12v socket, I can now play tunes via a USB flash drive, blue tooth  tunes from my phone, charge the phone and of course have DAB stations. It's even got a micro SD card slot so you can put tunes on there. It's best if you have at least a 3.5mm jack point on your swing radio, it connects the DAB unit better, if not it done by finding a free frequency but you may get a slight his via the cars speakers.

Plenty of the above in various guises on Amazon or eBay for not much money.

Ah I see...thanks Mick!

And that's a great tip on the DAB unit! I didn't know anything like that existed but just found one on the Halfords site that might fit the bill:

That certainly sounds like an easier option than retrospectively trying to upgrade/hack my low-spec Spaceback into a higher spec model. Cheers!

This is the unit I bought, maybe slightly cheaper and it also included the necessary dab aerial (stick on window type) only problem for you is the 12v socket, mines below the dash in the MX-5, is yours in the centre console by the handbrake?

It is indeed thankfully (in the centre console by the handbrake). Thanks for this Mick! This looks like it'll do the job perfectly!
