Tyre pressure sensor warnings

Featured Replies

Had 2 of these on separate wheels over the last few days.  Upon checking the pressure all is well.

Either they are super sensitive (which I'd like to think they are, giving you a warning at even the slightest pressure drop) or they are not very good!

Mind you they did alert me to a nail in a tyre some months ago, but there is a risk of "boy who cried wolf" about them constantly pinging warnings.

Same happened on my Audi A6 previously.

If you have reset the pressures then try setting the Tyre Pressure Loss indicator on the infotainment again.

In 20,000 miles I’ve had one valid pressure loss warning, and a couple of spurious ones. Which I don’t think is too bad a hit rate.

Since 2005 when we bought our first car with TPMS we have had a total of 6 cars fitted with the system and have done probably 120,000 miles.

5 cars have had the ABS system, 1 has had a valve based system.

In that time we have had a single warning on a car with the ABS based systems and a single warning on the car with a valve based system. A check with the pressure gauge showed the pressure was low but in neither case was the tyre visually different to the others. A further look with my Mk 1 human eyes found a nail both times.

Obviously I cannot say for certain but I suspect that without TPMS I would have been looking at buying new tyres and not simply getting a repair done in both cases.

In those 120,000 miles I have not had a single false alarm.

For the record 3 of those 6 cars have been VAG.

But lets remember that no TPMS system however sophisticated is a replacement for a regular check of the tyres for pressure and condition. No system will alert you to a cracked sidewall or a nail in the tread, only your eyes will do that.

@Mickey43  When you get a warning and check the tyre pressure cold to see all are at the cold pressure they were at when you last set them and the TPMS remember that if the warning is when the tyres are hot and you are driving that a binding brake or the likes can have a hub, so a wheel so a tyre getting hot and this can cause a warning.

If you get a warning with the car with the tyres hot is best to stop and check the 4 tyre pressures ASAP and see how they are, and maybe feel the centre of the wheel and see if all 4 are feeling, cold or warm or hot, or there is an odd one out.

Thanks Offski, sounds like good advice.
