Does start-stop hinder aircon operation?

Featured Replies

Hi all, this is my first car with start-stop system and from the dealers and mechanics of my previous ones (A4 B7 and Passat Mk6) all told me that the aircon compressor and the engine are connected, so I should only start and stop the aircon when the engine is idle.

Back to the Fabia, I was wondering whether the frequent start/stop of the engine hinders in any way aircon operation (I am talking like 5 such cycles in 15 minutes at 35°C)?

Welcome.

IME the Aircon will work and inhibit the Stop / Start if there is not enough charge in the battery, so the A/C stays on and so will the engine keep running while the car is at a stop.

If you are stopped with Stop / Start operational and no AC on and you switch on the A/C and needs must the engine will fire up.

Same as if stopped and you put on the headlights, heated rear screen, mirrors or what ever and the load requires the engine to start.

The AC will stop when the engine stops, and it will start pumping in warm outside air. The fan does slow though, which helps. If the temp is on full cold and fan speed set to 3 or 4 on a car with regular A/C, then that will prevent stop/start from operating. In cars with climate control, I believe that if the cabin temperature is too far above the set temp then the stop/start system is deactivated, but my Fabia doesn't have that so I can't confirm!

The A/C compressor itself is driven directly off the engine, so if the engine isn't turning, neither is the compressor. Turning on the A/C button will not in of itself cause the engine to turn back on if stopped, and there is no need to only turn the A/C on when the engine is idling.

I can confirm that my Fabia with Climate Control will keep the engine running if the cabin temperature isn't cold / warm enough for the set temperature.

As above, high fan speed (3/4) seams to permanently stop SS from activating, EVER!

In last years mini heatwave (yes it did happen in the UK!), I didn't really notice much issue with the A/C compressor being off/on due to SS.  I guess the cabin was already quite cool.

With climate control, on hot days, engine may re-start, if the climate control needs the a/c to maintain cabin temperature
