OK i can sort the air filter and ill leave the oil+fuel to the spannerman but how do i do the cabin filter?

No, sealed for life box.

 

Unless you've done 150,000 miles then maybe.

You asked that gearbox question in the other thread where you said you were giving the car a treat.

If the car is used, but new to you, you intend to keep it and especially if you use it to earn a living, then just do the whole lot...

 

Oil

Oil filter

Air filter

Fuel filter

Pollen filter

Brake Fluid

DSG Fluid (if applicable)

Haldex Fluid (if applicable)

 

I've never understood scrimping on basic maintenance.

^^^^  this, definitely.

 

Whenever I have bought a car second hand, I do all the basic things regardless of whether the vendor assures me the service has been done. I've also checked the correct coolant is in it and if I am not sure, had a flush and replacement done. 

Best to start from a known and correct baseline and proceed from there.
