Periodic flutter sound on idle and coasting in low speeds

Hi guys and girls. 

 

 

I've been having the worst time with my Octavia lately, and I really, REALLY need someone to convince me that my flywheel hasn't gone belly up..

 

I have this fluttering sound when the car is Idling, and it disappears whenever I nudge the throttle. The reason I suspect the flywheel is because I've had few diesel VAG's with the DSG gearbox in the past, and I've had to replace the dual mass flywheel on every single one of them.. I never learn.. However this one seems different somehow.

 

Just had the clutch assembly replaced 20.000 km ago, and i guess the flywheel isn't that much cheaper.. Clutch assembly set me back 2.600$ / 2.100€, and I'll be crying in the shower for weeks if I have to spend that much again..

 

The car is a 2011 Skoda Octavia 1,6 TDI DSG Greenline with around 200.000km / 125.000 miles.

From a fellow (non-greenline) 1.6 owner with a badly worn clutch and DMF, that doesn't sound anything like mine.

 

Pop the hood, and see which side the sound is coming from. If it's towards the right and seems to come from down below, then it's likely transmission related. If it's coming from elsewhere you're probably safe.

 

Definitely get it checked out though!

Alright! This is great news - I'll check it out when I get home from work. I've been told that this also could be a worn out belt tensioner or maybe even an exhaust leak. This would make sense as I sometimes can smell exhaust inside the car when I'm idling.

Well, I guess i'm fu**ed.. The sound seems to be coming from the deep left side when facing then engine bay - gearbox, right?

No that's good news!!! The other side is the transmission side, so bullet dodged my friend. It's hard to hear the sound on the video, but I too am guessing it's gonna worn pulley or something along the lines, since it's on the timing side.

 

Good news is it's not trans, so not a whole lot to worry about. Coming to think of it, worn idler pulley or something along the lines would make sense given that it only happens in certain parts of the Rev range.

I can't express how relieved I am! Did a quick search on youtube and found this:

The noise it starts making at around 1:40 is the excact same noise as in mine!

 

So now I just have to figure out if it's the alternator clucth, belt tensioner or air conditioning pulley that needs to be replaced.

 

Any idea how to easily diagnose this?

That video is much better, thanks. I'm not a mechanic, but from previous experience I know that there are a few tell tale signs.

With the alternator pulley, you might notice a kind of wobble when the car is running. If so, the bearing in it is most likely worn and will need replacing - easy enough to find at any parts store. This pulley will likely also have a bit of play in it if you try and wobble it by hand. 

I believe same sort of situation goes for the A/C pulley. The belt tensioner I'm not 100% about, but I assume there would be a bit of play in that as well.

 

Any mechanics? I'm sure there's someone who have a few tricks up their sleeves!
