Low speed rattle

Featured Replies

My 2019 2.0Tsi 4x4 has developed a low speed rattle from the rear, it’s been doing this for the last 5k miles.

It can be heard at walking pace and when reversing only particularly when slightly undulating i.e going up a dropped kerb, it sounds a bit like fuel slapping in the tank (maybe quicker) but it isn’t and it doesn’t make any difference in the tank contents. It’s not major but you can hear it and it’s annoying.

I’ve taken everything out the back so it’s not that. Being a bit keen I’ve got under the car and had a poke around, everything looks OK except the rubber coupling from the prop shaft to the haldex has a few mil of play in it backwards and forwards and guess what, it sounds like the rattle I can hear when moved by the outer ring.

I’m wondering if this play is normal? Propshafts used to have splined shafts and proper CV joints. Anyhow first service at 18k miles booked for a couple of weeks time so we’ll see.

I also have the flies in the inner rear LED lights, so let’s see what they do about that. (Expecting response  “they have to be vented sir” but so do the other lights and they haven’t flies in them.....) and haven’t they heard of gauze?

These are the same lights with the razor sharp bottom edge that managed to do a good job of slicing into my finger when washing the car. Design fail!!

I can’t help with the noise but I did remove dead spiders from the inner rear lights. Quite easy really, two covers on the tail hatch to remove and you have access to the nuts securing the lights. Getting the corpse out of the little holes is more problematic! You could have a point about gauze.🤔

I did a post with pictures about it a few months ago .😊
