Bad noise from Fabia VRS this morning

Featured Replies

Thought it was someone outside - but no, same noise was made a second time.

When turning the steering wheel to the right (moving around parked car) a loud sound that can only be described as a malfunctioning car horn (dry hoarse sound) was made. If it was made a third time I would have stopped right there. But in my 20 mile commute it remained silent.

So just wondering if this sound was something that is known? never heard anything like it before. If it happens more I will be able to pinpoint I suppose but don't want to be stick with a major failure if possible - try to be proactive with such matters.

Cheers!

Might be a broken front coil/top mount. Try moving lock to lock at low speed to replicate, then take a look, way up at the top end of the coils.

Well, I don't know for sure, but my Dad once (mid 1970s) had similar symptoms that traced to a broken spring on the horn contact ring. Maybe try pressing the horn/airbag pad at various points and see if there's one that feels soft?

I suspect the PAS fluid level is low and you can hear the pump cavitating at full steering lock.

Thanks for the input - if (probably when) the noise returns I'll look at these places first. Hope its not low fluid - would mean its the leaking rack issue...

Just top it up and see if the noise goes away.

Don't just wait for the noise to return, check those things now before it becomes a bigger and potentially more expensive problem. It shouldn't take very long.
