Hi all

I am wanting a change of scenery as my mondeo auto is slow and thirsty and was a starter to get me mobile after having my leg chopped off. I have a vrs in mind and I'm thinking Octavia 2006 to 2009 as I have always liked this version and due to timing chain issues I have read about on the 2010 plus range. But on the other hand there is something that keeps tweaking my interest in the mk2 fabia even though everything seems to suggest that the engine will probably self destruct, but I will ask questions of this in the correct section

Welcome.

I replied to your post on Mk2 Fabia vRS.

I am a right leg above knee amputee.

All the best with things.    Best not make life more complicated, just give Twinchargers and DQ200 DSG cars a swerve.

Loads of fun, but you want something reliable IMO.

Read the MkII Octavia section. If you buy  a petrol VRS, check cambelt changes, ABS G20 module and the ABS sensor ring in the wheel hubs can go, along with the air con compressor. The TFSI uses a bit of oil so don't worry as long as it's not smoking, ie after it's warmed up. I am not trying to put you off, you're looking at 14-11 year old cars. They are rock solid and enjoyable cars.

How long did it take you to get accustomed to it, Ive had my prosthetic for 12months so still in the getting used to it stage, ive got to persuade doctor that I need a leg with an ankle ( apparently near impossible)

I was young and back on motor bikes after about 6 months in hospital, then re-broke my thigh and started cycling, horse riding etc after another few months in traction.

After getting my knee amputated i was back fitted with a leg in 10 days and walking.

But i was a Broughty Ferry Limb fitting centre and it was the best in the UK if not the world. Professor Murdoch & Dr Troop were top guys that ran it.

Kellie & son Artificial limb makers were in Dundee & people from around the world came to train and learn at the Limb Fitting centre.

I have never had an ankle that moved yet had some of the best trial legs that there was at the time they were inventing them.

I always have the simplest & easiest to fix legs now as anything fancy is a PITA.

My scar is also tethered to the bone, im in final stages of my stump stabilising so can still be quite painful.

I'm wanting to get back out mountain biking when I have a leg I'm confident in but not ready yet

It can take a few years for a stump to settle down and it changes.

You just need a leg that stays on well to cycle, i know guys that cycle without an artificial leg, but i never have other than on trikes.

I have always cycled from the first legs fitted that were not pylons, & in the early years i used to have cycling legs, i used shorter cranks, or crank shorteners for years, half toe clips etc,

but in the past few years i have had electric bikes and seldom use a push bike. Now just use the same leg and no toe turned in  just any flat pedals.

Have a look in Cycling section maybe.

PS

A dropper seat post makes things so much easier when it comes to being comfy and getting your foot just right on the pedal and not overworking your knees especially on the good leg, and much safer starting off and stopping.

Ive recently started at gym and when on exercise bike my foot creeps forward and sideways on pedal and if I use the straps its not comfy on my knee. I have good flats on my bike and ive seen that you can get pedal spacers so sideways creeps not gonna be a problem, If I get an ankle I can see it stopping forward creep,  im going to get a dropper too.

Hoping to get out this year even if its just fire road type stuff

I have old Wellgo type bear claw style or Nuke Proof pedals with good pins.

I always have a shin guard (BMX style) on my good leg.
