Side light error despite using OSRAM t10 w5w

Featured Replies

So I decided to change the side lights of my Skoda Superb mk2  by using OSRAM’s T10 W5W. After installing I turn on the ignition and i see this error saying “check front right side light”. Both lights are working and upon removing and reinserting the right side light the error wouldn’t go away.
Hence, I decided to reinstall the stock blue bulb and weirdly enough the stock bulbs no longer turn on.
The OSRAMs work fine but the error is really bothering me and won’t go away. Please help.

The bulb warning system on the Superb can be a little over sensitive.

Sometimes a hard reset by disconnecting the battery can help solve the issue.

Don't be alarmed at all the extra warning lights on the dash when you reconnect it, these will all extinguish after a few minutes / miles, including hopefully the blown bulb warning.

Would it be better to clear the warning by using an OBD?

Could be worth a try, probably easier than disconnecting the battery...

The OBD didn’t help. The reading given by the OBD said: front-right side harness open to short. After clearing, the warning reappeared.
Besides the weirdest part is that the old original bulbs no longer work when I reinsert them.  They were always in working condition. It’s like it’s only accepting the new OSRAM bulbs.

The bulb monitiring system measures resistance. The old bulbs will have a different resistance to the new ones.

By fitting the new bulbs the 'system' has reset the threshold to which it expects the bulb to operate at.

For some reason when fitting the new bulbs the system has failed to recognise them, and putting the old bulbs back in isn't changing what the system is seeing so it continues to flag that there is an issue.

I think that you need to fit both new bulbs and reset the bulb monitoring system by disconnecting the battery.

Check the old bulbs are still intact.

The filaments go brittle in used bulbs, just taking them out can fracture them.

Clearing the fault should be fine.

Feels like there might be a loose or high resistance connection somewhere. Probably worth checking/cleaning the bulb holder contacts and the connector for the headlight too.

So I found this weird fix: just when I press the start button, I shouldn’t let the car go on the battery startup and wait for me to ignite the engine; instead when I press the start button hard on to directly ignite the engine and not go into battery startup, the warning light never occurs.

So, to sum it up if I wait to ignite the engine the warning light pops up else it doesn’t.

My theory is :-

When you switch the ignition on & wait, the battery will be at its lowest charge level. ( Lowest voltage )

The current to the lamps will also be at its lowest & that is tripping the bulb failure.

When you start the engine without waiting, the bulb test sequence hasn't had a chance to run.

As soon as the engine starts, the alternator will be charging & the battery voltage will have risen, so the bulb current will also have risen & so now passes the bulb current test.

It might be worth checking your battery voltage before starting the engine , could be that your battery is nearing end of its life.

The only way the error went away was by reinstalling new stock bulbs. Seems the Osrams that I got were not canbus friendly.
The mechanic told me that the Superb’s parking/side-light needs to have a voltage of 1.7V for the computer to accept the bulb as normal.
