Which PD???

Featured Replies

Im looking to buy one of the VAG group cars and it must be one of the PD engines. Im proberly going to buy from an auction. Is there any way of telling which version of the PD engine a car has, for example the VW golf all look the same but it could have a PD 100, 115, 130, 150 etc, is there anyway by looking at the car you can tell which engine it has??? Cheers!

I know with Skoda cars the pd 130 has the DI in red on the back of the car i.e.

TDI but with other VAG cars this varies

I would say generally, if you're looking at all VAG, just try to get one with as much red in the TDI bit as possible. An all silver one is likely to be a pd100, and one with just a red I is also likely to be one. PD130s generally have DI in red, and those with all red tend to be pd150s, but might not be? Confused?

There might be an old thread on here relating to badging of TDIs with VAG.

If you can get to the engine number, thats a clue, will be 3 letters and 4 numbers usually. The three letters dictate the engine type

ATD = pd100

ASZ = pd130

ARL = pd150.

There might be other PD engines out there, such as the 115bhp one, but I don't know its code. :)

Thanks, its so confusing! you would think that they would be clearly marked somewhere. I dont want to go to auction thinking im bidding on a PD150 and find out its PD100, although i cant afford a PD150. where would that engine number be on the car ??

You need to look right low down on the front of the block. Sometimes its really hard to see, but is usually embossed on the front. For example mine now says ASZ____ You might need a torch to see down low if its a bit dull.

iS IT NOT ALSO TRUE THAT THE pd 130 ARE ALL 6 SPEED GEARBOX . ???

I had a red 'I' beetle 100 bhp, but a bloke at work had a red 'I' passat 115 bhp

both same age (52 plate)

I thought i knew about these things, but vag seem to deliberately confuse the public for no apparent reason:confused:

my golf is 2001 PD100 and it has TDI on launch but i think the later PD100s only had one red letter

My god this is confusing, its like trying to buy a porsche and actually getting the one you want! not that i have the money for a porsche

The engine code should be on the sticker inside the wheel well of the boot too, shouldn't it? So if you can get into the boots of cars at auctions, and we can come up with a list of power outputs against engine codes - you could be onto something :D

I believe the stick is on the boot floor under the carpet and lists all the vehicles option codes as well as the power output. eg I think my Fabia was an ATD 74kW and then a block of meaningless numbers! :rofl:

Chris

the 74kW refers to power output. if i remember right, that's a PD115, and the 96kW one the PD130...

don't trust the badges on the back! they're only about 12 quid from the dealers...

74kW is 100bhp - my Fabia was a PD100 ;)

Chris

74kw = pd100. I guess pd115 is 85kw given a bit of maths?

Heres a decent list of engines:

66 kW (90 hp) @ 4000 rpm, 240 Nm @ 1900 rpm; VW Sharan

74 kW (100 hp) @ 4000 rpm, 240 N
