VCDS - CANbus Gateway

Featured Replies

Hi All,

This is my first post since joining so apologies in advance if I'm posting in the wrong place!

I recently became a proud octavia owner and purchased a pre-FL 2006 Octavia VRS Estate. Absolutely love the car but I'm looking to update the head unit as it's currently only got the base 'Stream' unit which doesn't even have an AUX input.

I'm pretty sure my model has the CAN gateway which causes battery drain if I tried to add a newer head unit so was hoping someone with VCDS and the cables could help me out to read the existing config and apply it to my new gateway? I'm in the north london area but more than happy to travel a little bit.

In case anyone's curious, I'm planning to change the Stream for an RCD330 Plus after reading that it should fit well and has android auto + carplay.

Appreciate any help!

Did you get this sorted boss?

Recently picked up a pre FL vrs estate myself,  and am looking to update the stereo with a HU that supports android auto via Bluetooth (wireless if possible), but doesn't drain the battery.

Seems there has been numerous threads about this, but seem unable to find a definite answer.

There is a list of CAN-gateways known to cause battery drain here: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Navigation_System_(RNS510)_Retrofitting

@DovD - if you don't find anyone with VCDS, take a drive up the M11 as I work in Cambridge so close-ish to North London :)

There are no 'stock' options that support Android Auto without a USB cable for this generation of car.

For Android Auto, the obvious choices would be the MIB STD2 PQ style Bolero/Amundsen from a 2016+ Yeti or the Chinese RCD330. Having used both, I much preferred the Yeti headunit to the RCD330 although it costs more and need component protection dealing with. Either will cause battery drain if the CAN-gateway is on the 'naughty' list :D

If I recall, the RCD330 had a few bugs around FM (no real RDS or AF support), volume and occasional missing BT connections. It's been a few years so later firmware's may be better?

There are loads of aftermarket Chinese things but I've never used any. Otherwise, you can get a branded double din unit and appropriate facia adaptor.

All down to you and what you want/expect really ;)

Cheers for this.

For me, I'm not too fussed about OEM kit, so may risk a chinesium HU with a non-naughty gateway.  Will keep researching,  as funds are going to be allocated to a cambelt change first 🤗
