mondeo tdci??

Featured Replies

what is the 2.0 tdci 130 bhp like in the mondeo, is it as quick as the vag 130bhp diesels. Im quite tempted by the mondeo as you get alot of car for not much money with the mondeo. Does anyone know the in gear speeds for the mondeo??? cheers

I'd say there wouldn't be much in it between a PD130 and the TDCI but the latter is newer 16v technology i think so maybe the TDCI would come out on top.

I know it's not as quick as a 2.0 TDI 140 Octy. The figures and my own experiences back that up. You need to go to the 155bhp TDCi to better the 2.0TDI although if Superchips torque/power rolling road tests for these cars in standard guise are anything to go by, the 155bhp TDCI would still only just have the edge over the Octy.

Driven a 130 tdci, and it didn't quite feel as nice as the pd130. It wasn't bad but the action of the turbo felt odd (in comparison) but it pulled fine, and was OK to drive. Sure I could get used to one.

This was in a mondeo and not sure if it weighed more or less than a furby.

thanks, i had a look at the weight difference and depending on the model there is only about 60kg difference bettween a mondeo tdci and a bora 130. Off to auction today and dont want to come back empty handed, trying to keep my options open. If only the mondeo wasnt so DAM common, cause it is a great car. i personly think the interrior in the mondeo is nicer than most of the VAG group cars

The "oddness" is because the car pulls from about 1200rpm so you don't get the all or nothing kick of the VAG diesels and the car pulls strongly throughout the rev range. The common rail unit is also more refined and (in my humble experience) an easy match for the 140bhp VAG units ;)

Where the TDCI unit isn't as good is in the tunability as it uses a single common rail pump rather than one per cylinder which prevents the fuelling being raised too high (although I'm sure if you upgrade components you can achieve the same  )

Are you after in gear times for the 5-speed or the 6-speed box? I have the 5-speed which seems to be more highly regarded in terms of performance, although I've never driven a six-speed Mondeo for comparison.

i have the times for the 5 and 6 speed cars from the website. do you think the mondeo tdci 130 would keep up with a fabia VRS?? cause there aint that much in it, in terms of weight. which bhp tdci do you have? and have you had it tuned?? thanks for the info!!

whats wrong johnie, i know the VRS would win, but by how much?

From experience of other ford engines I would say it drives more like a petrol car than a diesel with the pulling power comming in a bit higher up the rev range.

However this one is a peugot engine, well one they and ford worked together on.

It did feel less torquey than the PD130 unit. I drove a Mondy Ghia-X Estate TDCi 130 a couple of years back. Think that's deceptive though, as has been alluded to above, as the torque band is smoother and wider.

Found the unit a little quieter at startup too, don't know how that compares with other people's experiences though.

I'd have to agree that due to the torque band being wider and coming in much earlier on the 130 TDCI than my own Superb 130PD that, although the Superb feels faster due to the turbos kick, there is probably very very little in it between the two.

The Mondeo just doesn't feel as fast due to the more linear torque curve and the more refined and quieter engine, but it does shift. In particular, I keep finding myself in our TDCI ST, I know the Superb isn't meant to be sporty, but the ST is a fantastic car. and the transient overboost is handy for overtaking too (never understood why it isn't that powerfull all the time though?)

One other point worth considering is that Fords build quality is leaps and bounds ahead of anything VAG can muster.

I've never ever had any problems keeping up with standard Fabia vRS's from a standing start or in gear, especially when the road involves corners  My car is a TDCI 130ps Ghia X and is now tuned with a little help from K&N, Tandem Tuning and soon Millers :D

what can bhp can you expect when this is all done?

& what sort of cost?

Expected output is apparently 160ish. I could wind the tuning box up a bit more to ~170bhp but it's a bit smokier and doesn't like the red line as much! Total costof engine mods so far is about 200 quid :D

If you want to go down the remap route, Upsolute will work their magic for

Bluefin? Similar to that used on the Focus RS? It's a nice map.

Could be tempted - at least it would go round corners better ;) Only downside for me would be Ford dealers. Must say I do like the estate - just get confused over the trim levels  unless I just get an ST TDCI :D

Bluefin is the Superchips remap and the Ford line up is well catered for! I've never braved a Ford dealer and have had my servicing done at a local reputable Ford Specialist. Word on the street suggests going to RapidFit if you want a Ford stamp in the book - check the Ford website for more details :D

As for trim levels' date=' well there seem to be new ones invented every month, but the basic order is:

LX, Zetec (a sporty LX), Zetec S (a sporty Zetec with body kit and 18" alloys), Ghia, Ghia X, ST TDCI and ST220. There is also the Titanium X which seems to have a few bits from all of them, but isn't as well equipped as the Ghia or Ghia X.

If you want stealth, don't get the Zetec S or the ST  I also think the 155bhp engine is now available across the range and may be a better starting point for tuning, although in standard guise the 130bhp one seems to be more highly rated. :D

Plenty more info over on [url']www.fordmondeo.org[/url] - you'll be pleased to here our ole friend William now lives there ;)

Yay! Billy Boy lives

So a Ghia X with the most basic diesel engine (well badge anyway) and the 155 is a possible.

How's reliability? I hear many horror stories, but then I look at the number on the roads and think it must be inevitable that there are some dodgy ones with the number about...

No SDI equivalent, but I'm sure you could source a 1.8 (petrol) badge ;) Ghia X and 155bhp is available (Ford have a car configurator on their web site) and mine's never skipped a beat and is still rattlefree in the 17k miles (10 months) I've owned it. Just had it's 50k major service and full inspection and got a clean bill of health too. Our local taxi firm seem to like them too

Only weakness I know of (aside from depreciation!) is that the subframe bushes can wear prematurely. This may only apply to older cars though as the warranty was replacing them with "anti-wear" bushes which may have now gone into the production line. If you're visiting the nice chaps at Powerstation though, that lot may be immaterial ;)

No, no, no - I never modify my cars

We run 3 TDCi Mondeos as company vehicles. All of them have over 100k mile son the clock and they're all quieter and more refined inside, on all roads, at all speeds than my 1.8T Octavia ever was.

People have a dig at Ford build quality but if these three are anything to go by there is nothing wrong with them at all. And of course, being company vehicles they're not exactly treated with TLC.

Hey, both my Octys have been company cars and they've had TLC by the shovel load :grumpy:

;)

just to change topic abit........... 115 bhp engine in a VW bora 2000 (x reg) that is the PD engine, correct? they dont make a 115 non pd engine do they?

It's possible to pick up a 55 plate Mondeo 2.2TDCi Ghia for

Depends how long you intend keeping the car I suppose.
