Citigo Garmin map update not working

Hello everyone

 

I have recently purchased my son a Citigo montecarlo for his first car and it comes with the PID system by Garmin.  I have downloaded the software Garmin Fresh (and Navigon Fresh) and updated the firmware but for some reason it will not update the maps which are fairly out of date (2015 car).  It is almost as though the computer doesn’t recognise the device (but it does because I can see it in the device menu).  I know that I might not be able to get the very latest maps but any update would be a benefit (especially seeing as he is just starting out and learning his way around).  Could anyone give me some pointers or perhaps instructions to try something different?

I can’t even get the Garmin software to show the available maps for the device.  It’s as though the device isn’t being read correctly (but it updated the firmware?!?).  I’d pay but it won’t let me get that far into the process.
