1.9tdi horrendous noise

Featured Replies

Got an intermittent noise coming from somewhere! Put a new DMF and clutch in and its still there.... dropped belts and that makes no difference also! Its a 2009 1.9 with 175,000 on the clock...

Anyone heard anything like this before??

Thanks in anticipation

You need to pinpoint the source, try a short <1m length of garden hose.

Put one end to your ear and probe with the other end.

Alternator perhaps? Screwdriver on it and the other end on you ear lobe. Does the noise transmit.

One of the pulleys/water pump on the cam belt seizing? When were they last changed?

Yes, but not surprising since:-

  1. It's a diesel and they all tend to sound a "bit tappety".
  2. You're missing the engine top cover (first thing I noticed, before even hitting play).

4 years ago...Mechanics going to pull the cambelt tomorrow... I'm hoping its one of the pulleys or pump 👍👍

Is it the intermittent noise that comes & goes in the video then gets worse & becomes a screeching?

If so then its the alternator pulley one way sprag clutch.

Don't let the mechanic tear down the timing belt without checking that first, get him to run the engine with the auxiliary belt removed, you pight be able to get the noise to come & go or change frequency by switching on and off heavy electrical loads like the heated screen.

Already dropped auxiliaries,  still there...

Thanks for the input...

It turns out it was the cambelt tensioner!

"They all do that Sir!" :D

You sure dodged a bullet there!

Replacement part failing catastrophically well before the OE part that it replaced probably would have done, its why I change the belt (only when its degrading) and nothing else but react very quickly to any new noises which it seems you did so you should give yourself a pat on the back!

The noise came on quickly.......

A double pat on the back then!
