Diff explosion

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm new to the forum, I've introduced myself but not sure I put it in the right place and I've posted a question, probably in the wrong place, sorry I'm making a pigs ear and stumbling around like a drunk. So I'll have another go, sorry if I've done it twice, it's been a long day.

I'm wondering if anyone's come across this problem ? The diff on my 2010 octavia 1.4tsi blew up today. There was no indication of any problems before, just  the bang. Does anyone know if its possible to replace the diff or is it a complete gearbox? Also are there any manuals for that model? I don't mind doing it myself, but not without a manual. I'd really appreciate any advice thanks

Just to add, does anyone know where I can find a decent second hand gearbox, I've trawled the internet and found nothing.

Thanks

That looks kind of like the box has run dry and overheated. Is there any indication that there has been a leak?

As for finding a replacement, my best suggestion would be to find the gearbox code on the options sticker (look on the boot floor) and search for "skoda gearbox AAA", replacing AAA with the code for your car.

As for a manual the usual recommendation of an hour downloading from ELSAwin applies.

Thanks for your reply Ken, I did wonder about that, there is a very slight leak from the drives shaft seal as you can see from the picture, but I wouldn't have thought it would have lost much oil and I'd only driven 2 miles so be surprised if it overheated. But anyway it's toast now. Thanks for the advice about searching with code, I'll look for that and I'll look for that manual. I really appreciate your help, thanks

No problems.

Further thought has told me to say that a used replacement gearbox may not have come from an Octavia, or from a Skoda at all. Don't stress that; just match the code.

Also, ELSAwin is a website, but an hour's paid access is enough to get all the manuals for one car.
