Battery and Solid Amber Check Engine Light

Featured Replies

Hi!

2013 2l Diesel 5e5 and yesterday and the day before it needed a jumpstart first thing in the morning. Yesterday had the extra fun of a the check engine light coming on, but it didn't appear on the return trip, nor today. Battery voltage was 12.24 last night, and 12.14 twelve hours later. 14.67 when running, so the alternator is fine (phew). Start/Stop says energy consumption is too high. All this means I need a new battery right? (can't find my OBD2 reader just in case someone suggests that too). Battery SOC ranged from 70-90% yesterday and today it was 50%. Though it didn't need a jumpstart today.

Okay - the Octavia is very sensitive for battery wobbles.  If you get over or under voltage or big spikes in voltage which upsets the CANBUS, then you are going to get all kinds of errors pitching up.  Try clearing all the DTCs after the car has had a good run - see what you get.

Recommendation: get yourself something like an ODBEleven and this wil give you proper diagnostic information.  Any issues, you can post the codes up here for help with diagnostics.

In terms of battery - might I recommend that you go and invest in a solar panel charger for your Octavia.  When the car is not in use, connect up the device to your ODBC port and it will keep the battery charged up.  I recommend this unit for the AA.....
