Timing gear/oil pump noise?

Featured Replies

Hello and Happy new Year!

Just bought the car ,2019 mk3 Superb 2.0TDI 4x4 and the noise gradually became louder and louder in 2k miles.I fitted new aux belt and tensioner, the noise is exactly the same.Run the engine without the aux belt and the noise still exactly the same(air cond compressor and alternator excluded). The car is booked for servicing full timing kit, coolant pump and oil pump belt.I hope is not the oil/vacuum pump.

What do you think?

Does it make that noise all the time? Mine makes a similar strange noise briefly on warm up, my Dad has same engine in a Kodiak with about 8K miles on and that sounds the same, maybe for a few minutes if you were to start it and leave it idling.

Just to be clear, are you talking about the loudest noise in the recording or the secondary rubbing/chirping kind of noise? The lesser of the two noises could be a sign that the warter pump impellor could be rubbing on the sleeve, thats pretty much how mine started unti i replaced the water pump this year and the sleeve had got partially stuck and was rubbing causing a slight noise.

Not sure if the recording is making it sound worse than it is, but it might not be cause for concern.

Both noises and what you say about the water pump makes alot of sense. The noise fades like 30-40% as it gets warmer.

Meanwhile I found the Skoda official service bulletin,it's a common problem. The solutions is oe lube spray or new belt. Interesting

Interesting, I don't recall mine sounding any different after the new timing belt kit, but then again I usually start my car and within 5 seconds i'm driving off and no noises can be heard inside the cabin anyway.

It looks like there is no cause for any major worry anyway, I certainly wouldn't be going into the oil pump drive, that could be a reciepe for disaster letting the dealer mess with that.

Car has 127k miles and from what I heard is a propper time to renew the oil pump belt also.Pieces came loose and are getting jammed into the strainer.

.According to manual is a simple job,oil pan off, loose the pump and not much than that. 1.6 hours job

Where have you heard this? I’ve seen it on the Ford TDCi engines and on the ecoboost as a common issue but I haven’t heard of any issues with the VW oil pump belt drive (yet!)

It's the oil pump. It's not a mistake, it's a characteristic of the pump. Exchange it for a new one and in 15,000 km you have it again.

Solved.Timing belt tensioner was allmost stuck (OE Gates)

The oil pump belt was in good condition.
