Coolant Warning / Ongoing Issues

Featured Replies

I bough a used Skoda Superb in 2019 from a Skoda dealership ( Spirit in Sandyford, Dublin ) (Year of car 2018) It had approx.: 50km on the clock . In the first 3 months the coolant warning light came on. As I was under warranty I brought it back to the dealership.

They replaced the main water pump (not the timing belt which I thought was odd). when I asked at the time what the issue was I got "don't worry about it, its all sorted"  response. In hindsight I should have asked a few more questions at the time.

At the end of 2022 I noticed the coolant light on again and the coolant level dropping. The mileage at this point was approx. 68Km. I topped up the coolant when it dropped and the issue was intermittent. It got progressively worse in early 2023 when the coolant was bubbling over the tank and clearly not going into the engine.

I brought it back to the same Skoda Dealer (now NOT under warranty). They advised that they would have to replace the whole coolant system at a cost of 3,500 euro. When I asked what the issue was I got a response of: "It could be this, it could be that, it could be the other". They also said the system was contaminated.

I start doing some research and spoke to a number of mechanics (3) who all told me that the main water pump in the Superb TDI's have water pumps with a collar on  them that closes to stop coolant going in for a cold start. This collar then opens back up when the engine is warm. They said that collar on these water pumps have a history of getting stuck/cracked preventing coolant going into the engine and causing all sorts of other issues.

When I raised this with the Skoda dealer, to my amazement he had never heard of this issue. So every mechanic I spoke to knew about the issue and Skoda themselves didn't. Seems far fetched to me.

Now after only 70km on the clock (43k miles) I am not only having to replace a water pump for the second time that was replaced only 20km (12.5k miles) prior and now replace the whole coolant system?

If anyone has any feedback or insights on this issue it would be appreciated,

Take it to a specialist that knows what they are doing - steer clear of your current stealer!

Go somewhere other than your local Skoda main stealer!
