Thinking of getting Sonos home cinema set...not sure what sub to get

Featured Replies

Well, I'm allegedly hitting the big five-oh in the not too distant future, so I've been thinking of going for a home cinema upgrade (it felt like a good excuse! 😁). I've currently got an old LG system and I'm thinking of upgrading to a Sonos set, especially as they have a sale on at the moment.

The two kits I'm looking at both include 1 x Beam (Gen 2) and 2 x Era 100. The one kit has the the Sub mini whereas the other has the full Sub (Gen 3). What I'm not sure about is which one to go for. My living room isn't that big (12 x 13 x 8 ft) and I've read that if your room is under 300 sq ft then the mini should be OK. But I've also read some reviews which say that, even though the mini is good, it doesn't give the same depth and resonance as the Gen 3.

I do like to feel the bass in music and movies, but given it's a semi-detached house, I'm not really going to be whacking the volume way up.

Does anyone have the mini? How have you found it?

I don't have (and never heard) the Sub-mini, but do have the 'full' Sub (G1, IIRC); had the kit for years but thankfully all compliant with the S2 Sonos system. Even at low volumes the sub does sound very good with plenty of depth.

What I hadn't realised when I bought the sub was that once setup it takes all the base for the main speakers, even for music playback (not just TV/movie) - leaving the Play:1s and PlayBar to deal with the mid-tones and treble. Overall sound had a big improvement once the sub was in place.

Thanks Steve...good to know.

I think that's probably what I'll go for - I mean, if I'm going to do it then I might as well do it properly! 😉

We have a home AV setup but steered clear of Sonos since some of their business practices are less than agreeable to me.
We have a similar system but have used Yamaha Musiccast.

It's probably worth popping into a shop like Richer sounds and speak ingto their guys about options
