Suspension Springs

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I need some help on changing the springs on my car (Superb (big surprise there, considering i placed it in the Superb section) 2.5 TDi 2003 model). Dont say go to a workshop, they all want £200 and i cant afford that. Im not a total noobie when it come to mechanics, however suspension ive never touched. Does anyone have a Workshop manual or equivelent that i can use?

Otherwise a sterp by step guide would be appreciated.

Or any warnings and things to be aware of would help.

I know you said you dont want to goto a garage to have it done, but you'll need spring compressors to remove and fit the old/new springs (can't be done without) and when done, you'll need to have the tracking adjusted (or you'll need new tyes every 6 months). I paid £120 for my coilovers to be fitted and tracked (alot longer job than springs only) so I suggest shopping around for a better price. 3 years ago I paid £40 for my springs to be changed on my vectra, so you shouldn't be looking to pay much more at todays prices.

No Haynes manual available for Superb (A6 possibly the same???)

I have spring compressors included in the price (i bought wheels at teh same time)

The average garage round where i live is £50 an hour. they all said 4 hours. Plus tracking. So i can do the springs and get the tarcking done after.

The haynes side of things, the passatt is the same i think. however there maybe some differece. I know they use the same suspension in the a4, passat and superb. however cause of the engine i wanted to make sure it was identicle.

It is the same as the A4/Passat yes.

Fairly simple to do, you may struggle getting the bottom front damper bolt in if doing it on the floor, they can be a pain to line up sometimes.

Or if it is South West London, I know a man who'll do it for under a ton

I live near Guildford, Surrey. However i have a mate that is going to give me a hadn. He's a plant mechanic so hopefully he can work it out :)

And thanks for teh advice about the passat, i'll go get a haynes manual.

Thanks for help

Mav, if you get stuck or want it done proper, drop me a PM. My mate lives in Teddington and is a mechanic with access to ramps and "stuff". He does it it for cash, evenings or weekends prefered.

Oh the wheels look nice now but they will look lovely when it is lowered. mind u my tracing is so far out already. I will get it fixed after the springs.

Thanks for his details seems a really nice guy.

He is a really nice guy  Known him for about 8 years now and he's done loads of stuff on my cars in that time. Good to have him as one of my best mates

If you want to keep him talking, ask him about kites or mountain bikes :D
