Octavia IV polystyrene box/tray under the boot - no longer required

Featured Replies

I have bought and fitted a space-saver spare wheel, complete with tools, that came with its own polystyrene 'box' / tray. The polystyrene 'box' that was originally supplied with the car is now redundant. It is taking up space in my garage and I think that I will never need it again (if I ever sell the car (unlikely, as I really like it), I will leave the spare wheel and tools in place. The tray is available F.O.C. to anyone that can use it.

Which kit, rim and tyre did you get?

My concern was that a damaged tyre would leave me stranded, especially in a rural area a long way from any source of a new tyre, and, therefore, I decided to purchase a toolkit and space-saver spare wheel. There are many space-saver wheels on the internet but I didn't know which size, etc., would be correct for the car. Therefore, I purchased two items from a well known Skoda dealership:

"Toolkit for spare wheel Octavia IV"

"Spare wheel KAROQ/OCTAVIA/SUPERB"

The space-saver cost a lot of money.

In the next few days, I will take the space-saver wheel out of the car and post the full details on this thread.

(I would have preferred a full-size spare wheel but I couldn't find a secondhand one. I read somewhere that it is possible to cut the polystyrene tray to take a full size wheel, which then projects above the tray by a small amount. There is nothing special about the toolkit.)

I have taken photographs of the wheel and made notes of the details on them:

1) 31/2JX18H2

2) ET25.5

3) 5352 MWA

4) 1425

5)VWAG

6) two rows of numbers that I have photographed - see photograph. If they are not legible, I will take the wheel out again - just post a comment.

The wheel is held down securely by plastic fittings that come with the toolkit, if I remember correctly.

Details of the tyre will follow on the next posting.

The details of the tyre that is fitted to the wheel are as follows:

1) T125/70R18 99M

2) DOT 1OU L3LPG (that's how I wrote it down)

3) 0725 (week of manufacture)

In summary, the toolkit is very reasonably priced. However, as far as I can see, on the well known auction site, there are many spacesaver wheels, complete with tyres, that have the same wheel and tyre size and are very reasonably priced. There is an opportunity to save £+++ by buying the toolkit from the dealer and the wheel/tyre from the web.

The link mentioned above:

is highly detailed and informative, but a little bit too technical for me. If you have an Octavia 4.5 (and probably the 4), the details that I have entered can easily be used to look for an identical wheel/tyre on the web.

There are a lot of tyres being ruined on potholes and I think that the spacesaver is worth it for peace of mind and keeping mobile, especially when in a remote location or at weekends.

PS Remember that the wheel must be securely held in place and the toolkit strapped to the wheel with the webbing and clip supplied.

PPS If anyone has any further questions, post a comment and I will reply. Hope this all helps.

Quick question, I'm wondering if anyone could please tell me whether the space saver wheel 5QF601027B fitted with tyre 145/85/R18 would be suitable for my 2021 mk4 Octavia 1.5 TSI SE L, which comes as standard with 17" alloys and tyres 205/55R17? It sounds like it shouldn't tbf, but I really have no idea...

Which is what I did.

I had a look on the internet. The part number appears to indicate that it is from a VW Tiguan. I found the following listing which gives the wheel specification and it is different from that mentioned above in my posting:

eBay UK

''18 SPACE SAVER SPARE WHEEL TYRE 145/85/R18 4J ET28 VOLK...

Year: 2017. Model: Tiguan SE Nav 2WD. Make: Volkswagen. Body Shape: SUV. A signature may be required. Security Marks: All parts are security marked/photographed. This part is a used, previously fitted

I do not have the technical knowledge to say whether or not scotthugh3s wheel/tyre will fit an Octavia IV but the specifications of the wheel and tyre are different from my posting above.

@noccer99 It's for sale as taken from a Skoda Octavia IV, 2023 2.0 TDI which has been broken for spare parts... 🤔

Does anyone know if the space saver fits all four corners?

A car I previously owned had a space saver, which was a god send due to getting damage in the side wall of the tyre. Came to change, and noted it would not fit on the front due to the brake calliper catching. I ended up swopping the rear tyre to the front & fitting the space saver to the rear.

That may be the case but I think that one should not assume that it was correct for the car that it was taken from. There are many on the well known auction site with the wheel and tyre specifications mentioned in my posting above; these are good value for money compared to the one that I bought from the main dealer specifically for my Octavia 4.5.

I have not seen any reference in any documentation to the space-saver that I bought (specification above) from the main dealer not fitting all four corners.
