Mk3 2.0 TDI VRS coolant issues

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 2014 Skoda Octavia mk3 VRS 2.0 TDI at 293400km/182310miles

Around a month ago I started getting 'check coolant' warnings, and noticed that my coolant level was dropping. There was a clear exhaust smell from the expansion tank, and the exhaust itself would smell sweet. Goggle informed me that this could be an EGR cooler leak.

However, since I had little monies to get it looked at, and topping the coolant off seemed to keep the car happy, I ignored the problem. Around 2 days ago, my engine light came on, and a while later I got an overheat warning, and my coolant temp gauge went to the red for the first time, then soon after all the way down. At the same time my oil temperature started rising rapidly

I stopped the car and my coolant (which had slowly become more distilled water as I didn't feel like buying coolant just for it to disappear) was boiling. I let the car sit to cool down and drove home.

OBD port says there's a fault with the heater matrix, goggle tells me it could be a clog, as my heating doesn't work. (It has also kind of never worked regularly, I've had the car for a year, but I never bothered to look into it).

I think around 8 months ago I had the glow plug light turn on, and my car went into limp-mode, but it just disappeared after restarting the engine. Apparently a glow plug issue wouldn't make the car go into limp mode, and when I actually had a glow plug fault it just turned on the check engine light 🫠

Also have a bit of oil consumption, around 1-2l per 1000km. But I read that this isn't unusual and that chances are the engine would need to be rebuilt.

Will take it to get looked at, just thought I'd make a post in case anyone had any more insight into this, thanks!
