Hi, does any body know if the service reminder (miles to next service) should come on for a few seconds when you first start up the car, I have read somewhere that this is the case with the VW Passat,

If I remember correctly, the reminder does come on for just a few seconds when starting up. It was some time ago that my 1.9tdi had its first service (around 15k miles) and has now done 30k so I am expecting the reminder to pop up any day now.

When you car is getting close to your next due service it will indeed show 'SERVICE 1000 MIlLES' and then count down every 100 MILES until it displays 'SERVICE NOW'. The service light will also have a auido bleep with it when you turn on the ignition, this alarm and display can be de-activated as written in your service manual.
