Cable routing question

Featured Replies

About to istall a new Snooper in my Octavia vRS, and was hoping for some advice on routing a cable from the HU to near the rear speakers...........

do I (a) route it down the centre of the car, past the had brake etc, or (B) take it down the passenger side of the car, following the sills?

Which is most easy / tidy / potential to f**k up (I'm quite good at that!! :bonk: ).........

Cheers, and hopefully see some of you at the track day.........

Through the centre is by far the easiest way. Those sides are a real pain to get back on... See if you can dig up my ICE install buried deeply in this category. Think I have some useful tips in there (but that might just be my ego talking ;)).

thanks Q - but how do you get it under that carpet before the back seats..... ? and how does the hand brake cover thing come off? questions questions i know!

The carpet can be lift up just enough to push the cable underneath. Just flip up the back seats to see. The handbrake cover thing comes off if you remove the 2 screws which are located at the back of the front seats. Push them all the way forward to see them. I think there are also screws located underneath the ash-tray.

Personally, (sorry Q) I think going down the sides is good enough. I know some bits of trim are tough to remove, but as long as the front kick panel comes off, you can just lift up the edge of the strip bit, push under the trim above the seat belt, and then pop it out the other side, where trim is easy to remove... I did mine very quickly, but did help to tie off the cables to something rigid, like a thin rod, in order to "plumb" them under the irremovable bits of trim.

(and the centre handbrake surround trim was such a sod to remove from my wreck I'd never want to go that route in a car of my own that I wanted to keep in good nick - IMHO. :D)

Cheers Jason

so how foes the front kick panel come off then? is as easy as a prise with a flat blade 'driver, or is there screws to remove etc?

Cheers

ahem - how do I put this? - PULL IT! :D

IIRC - the glove box needs removing to free up this panel, but then you need to remove it for routing purposes anyway, once this is off (there's metallic clips IIRC so will come off with a read loud "PINNNGGGGGG!" - the same goes for the thin bit alongside the seat too.

The bit that goes up alongside the rear seat comes off with one plaggy screw, and another fitting that just pushes on... Then with the seat flap down you have direct access to the boot area.

( PS: damn, I wish I'd taken piccies with this second installation of mine... )

Hellish. Sounds like i'm gonna have a laugh with this one!

is putting them back on as simple as pulling them off then? just a case of push til it pings again?

oh and what does IIRC stand for? and whilst you are on, what about SWBMO (or something like that!)

instead of photos, do you live anywhere up near Darlington? you busy on saturday? (kidding pal!!)

cheers for your help!

IIRC - If I Recall Correctly.

SWMBO - She Who Must Be Obeyed (I'm sure you can figure out who it refers to ;) ).

Yeah, most trim is clipped in, so providing you don't break anything when pulling it off, pushing it back on is just a reversal of the removal... :D

Rob.

Quite a way from Darlington (Devon) - Wonder if I could become a mobile ICE fitting corporation? methinks NOT. :D

IIRC - If I Recall Correctly

SWMBO = She Who Must Be Obeyed ('tuther half)

BTW (by the way :D) the trim normally goes back with a smart thump, as long as the clips are in the right spot, just don't pull them out / bend them too much else you'll tear them (like I did with one bit of trim on my last fit. :D)

Champion!

yeah i have one of them SWMBO thingy's at home - she's the variable speed limiter when shes in the car............

i'll have a go at the weekend, and see how we get on with all this pulling / pushing and bending!

fingers crossed eh!

cheers for your help lads

Having never fitted a snooper I was wondering about the relevance of routing wire to the rear of the car - I kind of assumed all the cables and stuff would remain at the front of the car... There's not some form of detection equipment at the back of the car as well is there?

got one of those S6neo-R things coming. it has a GPS detector thing that needs to go near an upwards looking window (windscreen or rear window). don't want the dash getting clutterred with stuff, hence the need to wire it towards the back of the car. the lazer thing might go behind the frint grill if i can be chewed with the gromit behind the pollen filter carry on!

actual display part is going on a bracket coming from the no-use pocket near the HU....... well, thats the plan anyway!

I believe it's traditional to create a customised path through to the engine bay. ;) *cough* drill *cough*

Aye, i can see the SWMBO ( :scared: )being chuffed to bits with that carry on..........

best send her out shopping or something!

ha ha ha!!!!!
