Dash Board Part Removal

Featured Replies

Hi There,

I have a slight project underway, which I will put up in the project area when it get a bit further, however, I want to remove a part from the dash in my 04 Oct vRS, its that part that is in the centre of the dash, starting just below the switchgear for esp, heated rear screen etc, down around the head unit and 'cubby hole' and finishing below the Climatronic unit. Obviously I need to remove the HU and cubby box. How does the cubby box come out, then how does the surround come off? Does it just clip in?

Sorry for the vagueness of this, hopefully someone can help. I decided I needed to know how much it was going to cost if I messed up, and explaining the part I wanted to the very helpful person at the parts dept was a 'different' experience!

Many Thanks

Rob

Get yourself a haynes manual. It's not going to be perfect, but there are a lot of parts that need to go before you can get to the parts in the centre. I've done it when installing my MFD unit and apart from the right hand side of the dash, pretty much everything else had to be removed first.

Im thinking of taking my car PC out and will be replacing the same part

it seems pretty solid'ly bolted in though in tough

the bit at the bottom of the dash that comes between the seats (that the gearstick comes through) would need to come out also but that isnt to bad it unscrews and slides toward the back of the car just take the ash tray out first to expose some of the screws

the cubby box bit just pulls out once as the radio is removed

the silver trim just pulls off (gently) start at the bottom near the ash tray

Got a haynes in the for sale section.

Are you talking about the plastic trim around the buttons, radio and climatronic?

The trim just open the ash try and take out the tray itself. Then grasp the bottom of the plastic and pull it off carefully. It will need a bit of force but not excessive.

Thanks for all the replies. Its the silvery-carbonfiber-looking trim that I think I initially need to take out. Im actually installing a car PC, and I want the screen to be 'oem-looking' so Im hoping to flush it into the silver trim....

Ill give it a try when im at home later on...

JamesGarner: Do you have any pictures of your install? or any pointers/hints and tips?

Cheers

Rob

heres my dash

dash1.jpg

I used a xenarc/gain screen wich dont seem to be very common these days

think its a bit bigger than some of the lilliput / linitx screens

i had the lilliput in an old car and wasnt impressed with it

i had to trim pretty much everything to make it fit

even the buttons above the screen are 5mm smaller than origonal :o

the climate relocation was my biggest pain but once as the lower section was off it got a lot easyer

theres a chap on digital-car.com that put pics of his old install and it was really oem looking but he had access to a CNC to make a nice screen bezal

be aware that in sunlight you cant see much of the screen due to reflection

Very nice install. Are you running the system through the aux in on the head unit?

Actually, ive seen the pic of your dash before and its my "would like it to look like this" inspiration!

I have a 7" LinITX screen, have just installed the drivers etc and it seems to be ok, I may try and get a trial of Tablet PC edition from Microsoft, and see what that is like, see if I use the extra features etc.

The headrest mount that comes with the screen is a near perfect fit in the silver surround, so I may just mount this in there, it would also give me the ability to remove the screen should I wish, fairly quickly. Skoda Parts quoted

yeah audio is on the HU's AUX

tried direct to the amps and didnt like the volume control was just a but to fiddly wilst driving

was going to try a headrest mount idea myself at first

I intend to leave mine out, ive looked at the ones that are available, but they seem expensive, im sure someone at work would be willing to have a go making one up!

Ill put a posting up on the projects section when i get a bit further...
