air con problems 110Tdi slx

Featured Replies

Coming home from work tonight noticed air con was'nt blowing cold air. Further investigations have reveald what looks like a broken metal plate slowly revolving round the aircon pulley with engine running and making a jingling sound. Looking through the forum posts it appears its an expensive problem to put right.

When the air con is engaged the jingling stops ( clutch engaged) .Is it safe to drive it in this conditon, Is the pulley at risk of coming off or breaking somethig else.....I need the car for work until I can get it fixed!

Thanks

It's the clutch on the air-con compressor.

You won't do any damage but it won't be cheap to fix either

Have a search, pretty common. The AC clutch has failed and will require a new compressor.

As Lummox says, but have a look in your Yellow Pages for air con specialists. They'll be way cheaper than a Skoda dealer.

HI mine did the same for a while before the aircon stopped working,

I went for an aircon regas and after topping up gas found the clutch was still not cuttting in - after removing all the plastics under the engine found that the nut on the clutch was on fine and the clutch itself has broken up into three parts which were now on the undertray - it had failed on the 3 rubbery mounts / rivets - the guy found me a used one off an old compressor that he had and though it was a different design it fitted and works perfectly - plenty chill now !!

A top job and big thanks to 'cool car aircon'.

Well worth a try to replace just the clutch - (you can get new ones for around

I think they fould the issue was the airgap isnt correct on the magnetic clutch to even when the clutch is disengaged it drags creating heat. This melts the nyloc insert in the nut and it comes loose and the clutch then falls apart. The only problem is the heat generated often knackers the end bearing so if you do just change the clutch (which has to be shimmed correctly) it could well need a compressor not long afterwards.

Hi lummox

Got all the window gubbins out and got the the new regulator....Looked a sod of a job but pal of mine from work and myself sorted it out quite easily in the end. New regulator was a must as cable was U/S . Top job.
