Overhead leds

Featured Replies

Any ideas what the voltage is on the red leds catvision? Thanks

I'm guessing it'll be 12v ;)

i think it is about 3.5 to 4 volts on the led itself, but somewhere there is 12 volt in the overhead light.

Thanks for the replies guys, basically what I want to do is replace the red LED's with some green/white ones but need to find the voltage lol

LEDs are current operated devices - the voltage is of secondary importance. There will be a ballast resistor somewhere to ensure that the forward current to the red LEDs fitted is correct for a 14V supply (12V on charge). If you change the LEDs you may need to adjust the value of the ballast in order to obtain the manufacturer's recommended forward current.

I found the LEDs in my Superb to be a complete waste of time and gave a highly annoying reflection from the gearlever kn0b - what a design ****-up.

A small piece of black tape has fixed this for good.

LOL........certainly no 'design ****-up' IMHO......

i think the red light at night is excellent....super red glow when i look for the push button for the cigar lighter.......and other general items when driving at night....its nice to have a bit of individuality in my opinion.

On my Superb, all of the controls including the cigar lighter (I don't smoke) light up at night anyway.

Does anybody know what parts would be needed to do this yourself ?

APart from buying a W8 unit.

2 x 12v Red LEDs

2 x LED caps/holder...

Cable to run to light switch/panel/plug thingy. :D

What else ?

resistors will probably be needed for the LED's

small diameter heat shrink to cover joints (or insulation tape if you have to)

heat gun to shrink the heat shrink

solder & soldering iron

EDIT

Just noticed its for an Octy

I did this in my old Octy, all i did was i drilled a small hole in each of the 'map lights' of the std front interior light and then hot glued the LED's into place.

This way the red lights were invisible during daylight, but when the lights were turned on they made the map light glow red lightly, when the map light was turned on it worked as normal too.

Slightly off-topic, but was any Superb offered with a black headlining, and therefore a black version of the interior light?

Hmm... I'd be interested to know this as well... so I thought I'd bump it

I can give you a hint or a lead on this....

The MK4 Golf Anniversary was produced with black headlining and as a result all te interior lamps were as well so these can be sourced from VW if I am not mistaken but I have no idea of part numbers, etc.

Might be worth searching on this site uk-mkivs

Did the Mk4 Aniv have catvision though? Or was it just the Passat?

Don't think it had Catvision mate but it's an easy mod to do to any interior lamp though....

This is true. I was thinking about it for the Mk2 anyway, she's due some headlining surgery in the near future and I like the catvision and map reading lamps in my Superb.

In response to what rotodiesel said earlier in this thread...

It's a bit harsh, but he has a point. It doesn't bother me as my Alpine headunit's pretty bright so it drowns out the glare off my, er, ****. In any case, the Mk2's got a standard golf ball **** so no worries about glare for me! :P

LOL!

Spot the word filter... *now* I understand why rotodiesel said kn0b...
