Felicia. Clutch or gearbox?

Featured Replies

Hi all

after many thousands of happy miles my Feli decided to go on strike.

Can`t charge the gear, but once forced in by strenght it runs and seem to be fine. I checked the gear box oil and looked at few other bits but the problem seems to be beyond my skills. Any idea what it might be? Or any good ,trusted mechanics/garages in around SW London. This car never broke down before so I am trying to work out what best to do.

Thanks

humm, could well be clutch

do the gears grind?

:)If it goes in gear with the engine switched off, but not while it's running you have a fault with the clutch.

some times on mine the gears dont line up properly. so to get her in to first, you have to push the gear stick towords the first gear position, then slowly lift the clutch. you then feel the gear slip into place, and all is good.

Both problems sound a bit like a dragging clutch and/or weak synchromesh to me.

Thank you all for your sugestions

I cannot charge the gear neighter when the engin is off, nor when on.

It grinds only when trying to push the reverse in.Other gears quiet but very stiff almost imposible to push in from the begining , but once the car is moving they go in kind of easly but far from what it used to be. Today I noticed small leakage from the gear box.:(Prety sure it did not leak before as I park at the same place every day and checked and topped up about 0.3 liter of the oil when started having troubles with it.

I also called Mr Clutch garage in Wandsworth today to get an idea of the cost of the repair , £ 230 for new clutch but £620 !! for new gear box.I just hope its not the gear box because I would probably have to get rid of her. I would hate to do that as she has been so good until now and I got used to her.

Before our old felicia was sold the gear selector broke. Just before that my wife was complaining it was getting harder to change gear. I would seem that the linkage rod had bent. It then broke under the strain. Might be worth checking out.

slap a second hand box in.

It could be a seized bush on the gear linkage directly below the lever, it just needs taking out, cleaning and greasing.

I'd go along with the siezed/damaged linkage bushes and eventually a bent linkage from excessive force being used, if that's not happened already.
