DMF life with DSG

Featured Replies

My mind is not clear on the relationship between DMF failures and the DSG gearbox. Are there DMF failures with a DSG box? If there are, are they as common as manual boxes?

In Briskoda, there are constant references to Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) failures.

Where do I, as a DSG car owner stand?

A manual car has a clutch bolted directly to the flywheel.

With a manual car it is possible to abuse the clutch by :-

1. Slipping the clutch.

2. By abrupt foot off clutch causing the clutch to engage violently.

3. Sitting in gear with the clutch pedal depressed - while at traffic lights for example.

It seems to me that such behaviour could well stress and so affect the life of a DMF.

As I understand it a DSG car cas a DMF, however it doesn't have a conventional clutch. The clutchpacks lives within the gearbox. There is no way that the DSG clutch can abuse the DMF as all changes are silky smooth.

I don't even know how the DSG gets its drive from the DMF.

Anyone like to comment?

you need to read this here DSG (S-Tronic) - What the DSG transmission is - how DSG works

DSG boxes seem to be very reliable and the clutches are intended to last the life of the car

That doesn't answer the DMF question. I have wondered about the DMF issue with DSG too

peterg1955 Thank you for reply.

It is not the DSG or it's clutches that trouble my mind but it is the DSG relationship to the DMF and DMF life.

The images shown within your link actually show the flywheel connected to the DSG. Interestingly it shows the connection to the hub of the flywheel and not to the outer ring as on a manual.

Does it follow then that the DSG DMF is a different animal to the manual DMF?

I don't know if this is any use but I had an Audi A3 3.2 quattro with DSG. I ran it for 2 yrs and it had a 'launch control' function where you turned off the traction control put it in sport mode, held the car on the footbrake, put 3000 revs on the clock then took your foot off the brake. Mine was an ex demonstrator and obviously had this done several times and I had no problems. I had such faith in the dsg I bought another one.

The DSG DMF is slightly different. I have changed a few on VW's but on the whole the DSG package inc the DMF have been very reliable.

Mereside I'm grateful for your comments as it all helps to build a picture that was not at all c lear to me.

Lummox I'm delighted! to receive your comments.

As long as they are serviced properly the DSG box seems to be pretty darn good. Just talked my Dad into buying an S-tronic (DSG in the Audi).
