  1. Basser got back to me. The box cutout doesnt quite have the same shape required for the TW3. Waiting to hear back if they can mod for me to suit, before I figure out how to mod so I can use it. Going to work on Sound Deadener this weekend while I wait.
  2. Im not expecting it to pound the house down, but rather provide a level of bass that the system should have had to begin with. ~50w per VC should be enough to improve it at normal listening levels. It's enough for me anyway, and if it's not, well at least the sub is capable of taking a massive amp and really shining anyway ha ha.
  3. Just to help people looking for an as "factory" as possible upgrade, JL audio now do a 10" Dual 8ohm voice coil sub - 10TW3-D8. Combined with the box from basser, it effectively becomes a upgrade using all the standard wiring and just removing the canton and putting the basser box/sub in place. I'm in the process of contacting basser to get a wagon sub box shipped to australia, and getting one of the 10TW3-D8 imported (australian importer of JL does not bring the D8 version in). The sub is not cheap ($500 AUD) but has great sound quality and is a proper sub. The canton amp should be enough to power it to OK levels, while keeping everything easy to switch back to factory in a few minutes. No running wires, or getting convertors etc. For me it's not cheap ($500 AUD for sub, plus about $200 for the box) but it means its basically a factory setup that I can switch out when I go to sell the car and leave no marks / holes/ anything. I'm also doing the whole boot / rear arches with sound deadener so car should be a bit quieter and actually be able to play proper bass in music. I'll post some pics in a few weeks when its all done. Thanks to OP for starting the conversation, it's made me look to upgrade the sub which is abysmal - the rest of the system is decent. I'm confident (especially knowing how good JL products are) that this will give me exactly what I want.
  4. Wow, sorry to hear you've had issues. You're the first aussie i've heard of having any major issues with a mk3 octavia. Ours is a manual, which essentially avoids any DSG related issues, and ours is also a wagon. Other than that, we just had the 3 year service done (at 26K) - and the car has been faultless. Its been a fantastic car, and from what I can tell will provide years of reliable service to come - I dont really see the point in "upgrading" at the moment as nothing else I like either A) Comes in manual or B ) is as good as what we currently have. I moved from Brisbane, so it sucks that the only installer you know is there. It's the one thing I just dont trust people with as what ive seen from most is they are slap happy with terrible workmanship and do some of the stupidest **** out. I'd love the sub to be upgraded, but am seriously considering looking at doing it myself, just so I dont get issues caused by the installer. I've done full boot sound deadening in a few cars and it made a decent difference - like you I asked about a pro installer as I know that removing the door cars is both risky (airbag modules) and prone to causing rattles, which the car has none so far. Sounds like I should skip that as it's more risk than reward to improve the front doors. Have you put the bits in the for sale forum here? I didnt realise the hatch and wagon had different sub boxes required (as they look identical in the back otherwise.)
  5. Sorry for the grave dig, but I dont suppose you have somewhere to suggest in southern / south west sydney that could do this? When i demo'd a hatch with the canton, I thought it was decent, but ive been disappointed with my canton since new (we have a wagon) and want a better upgrade. The fronts / soundstage sound plenty good enough, just the sub sucks. I gather its a "order it all yourself and hand to installer" type of deal, which i'm happy to do (and i'd pick JL subs also). I really just want someone who will pay as much care and attention as you have, without butchering the car, or putting self tapping screws everywhere (breaking the galvanizing seal). Drive in, drop car off, pick up that arvo kind of deal. I'd love the front doors deadened at the same time also if possible. EDIT: im at picnic point
  6. I have been in other cars where the sunroof was equally costly, but a huge disappointment, so I do understand the hesitation in optioning one. This one is like a practical convertible in giving that "airyness" to the car. From a safety aspect, maybe you could look at the aspect of if the doors we somehow wedged closed, and there was fuel everywhere, its easier to smash the sunroof and pull people out, than bring out a cutting device that will likely introduce heat/spark to the wreckage.... TBH though, if the car is in that bad a state, I dont think it matters either way!
  7. Interesting you comment about glare. Where abouts do you live? I Live in Brisbane, australia which is the second hottest capital in australia (behind darwin) with average 262 days a year of sun (either full sun or partly cloudy) and I would never buy one without the pano roof. It's that good. I think i've had the blind closed half a dozen times, even in summer. My wife who is fair as a marshmellow even likes the roof as she doesnt get burnt through the glass. I havent ever seen sunlight come through the edge of the roof, only through an opening (i.e. when its closed, the tinted glass cuts 99% of glare out) To be fair, I have side window tinting makes a huge difference to glare (I have 20% VLT tint on the car, which is dark, but not pimp/limo tint). Each to their own of course, I know people that dont like convertibles or sunroof's but everyone that has been in our car always comments "wow!" EDIT: Fixed picture showing tinting.
  8. Agree we dont particularly need it, but it goes to show how they count every cent (or pence for you poms!) and where they can make cut backs. I'd still have one just for ****s and giggles and I live in Brisbane, which I dont believe has ever had snow (Ipswich has had some serious frosts before though!)
  9. http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/brisbane-news-weather-traffic-and-transport-in-your-courier-mail-bff-blog/story-fnqcjzme-1227443888952 A few weeks ago we had a cold snap in QLD (hot state towards the north of australia) and it snowed in many places. Admittedly snow in QLD is a rare even, but in Victoria, NSW, Tassie and SA frost is quite common in winter. Some colder parts will get ice on cars (Canberra, parts of vic and tas) Its purely a money saving excercise
  10. We've had the car 8 months or so now, and driven with lots of debris going across the road. I think it just happened to be a very unlucky combination of the right trash, at the right spot at the right time. Although it could cause an issue, theoretically if everyone drove a safe braking distance, it shouldnt. (or if everyone had AEB....)
  11. Def works at high speed or low speed, and I can now confirm that an appropriately positioned chip packet will trigger a brake event. The wife was on the highway, doing 100kph, without ACC on and a chip packet blew up and directly in front of the car, and the car did an emergency brake (as in absolutely mashed the brakes to slow the car) without intervention, but released once the chip packet blew away. Wife said it was a really hard stab, and brought the car to about 40kph in the time it took the chip packet to cross the cars path. The thing that shocked her the most was her foot was on the accelerator when the car braked (lucky for us, no one behind!) I've had it signal red and beep when people are turning and i'm approaching them (and could safely pass without touching anything as long as they continue turning) but havent had brake activation yet. I'd still have it, its a good additional safety net.
  12. Fraid not. I have an ambition+ with tech pack, and it has the same A/C. One of the real annoyances I have only elegance and rs have climate control, which seems silly in this day and age! The A/C works well enough (cold in summer, warm in winter) but it's annoying to have to manually control how hot/cold it is. Good honest review though
  13. Xenon's are awesome. I get in our other car and think the lights aren't even on...... IMO worth it
  14. I have a pano roof, and IMO one of the best options. The kids LOVE it (so does swmbo and myself) and the car just feels so open and awesome. I rarely even have the blind closed. The 19s do make the car look brilliant though. I have canton and bolero, and it's OK, but only with really good quality recordings. Sounds a bit average without it. Sound is no difference with Columbus though (all speakers amplified with amp if canton specced). Good luck, hopefully the mid life update will bring mirror link!
  15. My 1.4tsi used about 100-150ml of oil in first 2000k, but hasn't used any since (6k on clock now). How many ks on your TSI now?
