  1. Garage has done compression test and block test and said oil cooler luckily
  2. This is for Mk1 but not much activity there so posting here also, thanks Hi All, AUQ 130k miles Has been losing coolant and white smoke out of exhaust for a while Replaced some coolant pipework and thermostat which stopped it for the most part where it appeared to be leaking Notice a slight shimmering film on top of coolant reservoir before driving Drove for several hours and coolant red light on dash came on with alarm As close to home (and temperature not going up) drove a mile or two to house and parked up Left overnight and checked coolant this morning and its changed colour to a murky brown (from darkish pink) The level of coolant it above minimum so not sure why the alarm went off as level and temperature seemed fine. One thing I noticed when opening expansion tank was a pop and hiss (escape of gas?) which hasnt happend before especially after leaving over 12 hours. Is this likely to be a head gasket gone or an oil cooler letting oil into the coolant or something else? no white may on dipstick or under oil filler cap (does use a bit of oil though as need to keep topping up) Any advise appreciated, Thanks

  4. Hi, I have a 2004 1.9 AWX TDI Last October I parked it up as since getting it (1 owner service history) it has had timing kit and new turbo and then the dmf and gearbox needed fixing I was unsure if I was going to keep it but I think I might now as only 105k. Question is should I syphon the fuel (1/4 tank) been sat since October or should I add biocide and top up? Whats the risk and how realistic is it of causing damage if I just run it on the diesel thats in there and do nothing to it? @rotodiesel Appreciate any thoughts you have on this Thanks,
  5. Hi, What would be the symptoms of an auxilary belt failure? I am reading as well as the alternator and power steering the water pump would stop working? I thought the Octavia VRS (mk1) water pump was driven by the timing belt, so how would the auxilary belt snapping affect the water pump? Thanks,
  6. So in the sump, is it just the oil pickup with strainer that could get blocked or is there a turbo oil feed pipe in the sump also which doesnt have a mesh to protect from debris getting pushed into it?
  7. What is the oil flow from the sump? Would the oil filter stop any small parts (if it broke off and got past the oil pickup strainer) from getting to the top of the engine and the more delicate turbo feed?
  8. Hi, Today whilst pulling out the dipstick to check the oil level on my Mk1 VRS a 1cm or larger piece of the dipstick plastic on the dipstick handle (just below) broke off and went down the dipstick hole before I could grab it. As it was so large is it ok to leave in the sump until the next oil change (assuming it comes out) or is it going to be a big issue? I had to drive quite a long way today also after this happened. What is the likely outcome of this being in the sump? Would it melt? What issue could it cause being a larger piece? Can I leave it? Thanks, Ben
  9. Thanks all What I've learned form this is G12+ should be fine to top up a G12 coolant system which is what I may need to do. Appreciate your thoughts and comments and links
  10. Hi, I have an Octavia MK1 VRS and need to top up the coolant. I can see on the expansion bottle it states G12. I cant seem to find any G12 to buy, only G12+. Is G12+ able to be added to G12? (I read somewhere where someone had put together a grid that it shouldnt be) but they look the same in colour? (Mine is slightly browner than pink) Any advise appreciated, Thanks, B
  11. I should add that when in gear and put foot down the gear stick physically moves forward (when in 3rd) and then comes back when let off the accerator
  12. Hi, I have an 04 plate 1.9tdi (AWX) and it has a noise in all of the forward gears most notable under deceleration but also there on acceleration. The noise seems to be getting louder and is all the time now whereas prevously it either wasnt so loud or wasnt all the time. (It sounds kind of like a whirring sound and speeds up in its whirring as the car accelerates and slows as the car decelerates) Reverse gear doesnt seem to be affected. If I put the clutch down it stops and if I hover over the bite point it also seems to stop within that very small range near the bite point. If I put it in neutral and then back in to gear (3rd gear is most notable for this point) it seems to sound like something is continuing to spin from when it was in gear before making it harder to get back into gear. I apprecaite this is difficult to diagnose but does anyone have any ideas what it could be and will it likely lead to a breakdown if left? Car has done 105k and has had 1 clutch change Previously at about 70k and DMF is chattering which I think is a different issue to solve Thanks,
  13. Thanks all. I have checked it when the engine is cold having not been driven since the day before. I always believed this was the best time to check it? Is that correct? I have the second dipstick in the horizontal row above (Thanks for that) and it is about 1/3rd up the dipstick outside of the indented part (A)
  14. Hi, Car has been in garage and ive checked oil and its above the area on the dipstick where the min and max are and its on the main shaft above this by about 1cm. Is this that big an issue (Engine doesnt seem to leak oil anywhere)? How much extra oil would that be and should I use a pela pump to suck some out of the dipstick hole?
  15. Hi All, I recently bought an 04 awx 5 speed manual 1.9TDI on 99k one owner from new, Within a month of owning it there is a whine noise under deceleration commensurate with speed and this has now evolved into accelerating as well which seems to come from the gearbox area. Any ideas what it may be? DMF "chatters" a bit at idle (and gearstick vibrates) but the "chatter" stops when clutch is depressed in case related. Not had a gearbox oil change as far as aware or a clutch or dmf (Changes gear fine) Thanks,
  16. Thanks @SuperbTWM I will see if I can get a video up of it. Its really only at idle and Ive listened for the "clatter" when turning off the engine but only heard a tiny bit once so not sure. I assume it will just get worse if it is it until I get it changed. I assume I can drive on it for a while? I am thinking of getting the alternator changed as its 20 years old but reading online it may not be worth it just alternator pulley? I know alternators wear but is it mileage or age? Or a combination? Car has done 98k over 20 years so not sure if just use to fails but as getting all auxiliary belts done and tensioner thought Id get the alternator changed as well nut it seems the original ones were the best? Thanks for your input so far, good to learn more on these as they are great cars
  17. Would a failing dmf only shake when in gear, out of gear or does it not matter? If I leave it what is likely to happen over time? I need to get a timing belt kit change done which is about £650 so I would rather wait a while as the clutch on the car seems good @SuperbTWM
  18. Bump, Can anyone advise please?
  19. Hi All, Just purchased another MK1 Superb (04 AWX) single owner 98k. Car is in very good condition for year. It needs a new timing belt and auxiliary belts and service (Will get tensioner and pulleys done as well for both). I have noticed that when in neutral the gear stick visibly vibrates and if clutch is in or not it doesnt make any difference. When in gear this vibration isnt there. Is this likely to be dmf on way out? (Gearbox is tight and clutch feels ok) (No obvious clattering when turning engine off) @rotodiesel @jimbof - Hi Guys, any of your expert advice please? Thanks
  20. Hi All, Interesting experience happened today when I went to open the door to get out of the car the metal interior door handle snapped off in my hand. Has anyone ever replaced one of these? Is it just the door handle or the whole console where the door handle is that needs to be replaced? Is it a simple job? Other than ebay and breakers any ideas where I might get hold of one? Thanks,
  21. I removed the two rubber plenum bungs in 2016 when I got the car as one of the first things I did. I havent looked under the scuttle panel for a while though so will check the pollen filter to see what state it is in. With regards the resistor block anywhere I can find any info out on this so I know what I am looking for? Thanks,
