  4. To be honest I don't think my mates problems are to do with fuel going off, he uses his car more than I do and I've never had any actual problems like he has, I don't think he tends to brim his tank often either usually just topping up every now and then whereas I will brim my tank with super when I'm on the mainland, and usually take a few jerry cans of it back with me aswell. Would there be any downside to running something like this:- https://www.amazon.co.uk/STP-GST56200EN-200ml-Power-Booster/dp/B008R9GLAE?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1 in every tank (of locally bought standard fuel) as a precaution? I would love to get my car mapped aswell, but the lack of premium fuels available is a concern, I don't want to be left thinking I can't use the car because I can't get fuel for it!
  5. Thanks, yeah I'm pretty happy with the interior! The cable ties are just a temporary measure, will probably just replace the pipes at some point, i did think about screws but I don't want to create any air leaks
  6. So our first drive out didn't go too well, first proper journey out on the road having got it fully legal and about 3 or 4 miles in there was a bang, loss of power and lots and lots of smoke.. turned out to be the lower intercooler pipe had blown off, fortunately, so bodged that with some cable ties to hold it on and its as good as new, or sort of! Now have a lovely new interior fitted from a MK2 vRS, what a difference it has made, its changed the whole feel of the cabin, the old ones are actually scrap they were in such a poor condition, fitted a new carpet off a breaker as well while we were at it as the old one was badly worn through in the drivers footwell, also complete with some lovely green lighting in the interior roof lights and front footwells! Also now have our custom made headlights fitted from Modified Lights UK, can't recommend them enough, they are absulutely fantastic and change the whole look of the car, it looks new, clean and fresh.. compared to the horribly misted up old original headlights, that had broken clips on them, and I absolutely love the look of the angel eyes in the dark. When we got the car it had 4 legal tyres, but of cheap budget brands (some of which I couldn't even pronounce) and none of them matched, so its been fitted with Continental Contisport Contact 5's all round which has made a huge difference to the way the car feels on the road, although with its current suspension set up, some cheapo coil overs its still riding far too hard to next thing will be swapping that out for a decent set of lowering springs and shocks.
  7. Hello all, I'm sure it's been covered before but can't seem to find a definitive answer. I live on a remote Scottish island and can't buy any sort of premium fuel, 95 is the best and only you can buy, and when I'm on the mainland with the car I always use super unleaded, I've managed to not put normal petrol in the car since January, but now I'm running low and with no immediate trip to the mainland planned I am considering the use of octane booster instead of just running it on the standard petrol alone. The car is a mk2 facelift VRS on a 62 plate, totally standard not been mapped or anything like that. Do you think it would be beneficial to run it with octane booster? If so with every single tank or only every so often? Which octane booster would you recommend? Is there any downside to running 95 with octane booster in every tank? Another reason I've been put off running on normal petrol alone is that a friend of mine has a Mini Countryman John Cooper Works (1.6 turbo) he runs it on the standard petrol we can buy here all the time and finds that from time to time the engine management light will come on with the message "increased emissions" but brimming the tank and adding a dose of redex will cause the light to turn off almost immediately after running it with the redex which leads to me to believe the normal petrol that you can buy here is just not good enough for relatively high-performance engines, but possibly not even as good as the standard fuel you'd be able to buy on the mainland. Any input is welcomed. Many thanks.
  8. Well here we are almost exactly a year on.. I had intended to post regularly on here with progress but, as somewhat of a cliche with project cars, its taken considerably longer than anticipated to get anywhere with it, everytime one problem was sorted it unearthed another but we finally got a clean sheet mot on it yesterday after nearly 2 years since it passed its last one. Its had its timing belt and water pump which has as we thought cured the overheating issue, mechanically its also had an ABS sensor, front caliper, and its had the floor pan welded up round the handbrake mounting point as it would appear someone got a bit trigger happy with it, for which we had to remove the entire interior and carpet. Also had to completely re-build the front doors with new electric window mechanisms and door lock units as they were all shot windows didnt work and doors didnt stay shut, managed to also find a way to bolt the inner aluminium door card back on instead of using the absolutely stupid idea Skoda had of rivets??? What were they thinking? We still have a long list of jobs to do including changing the horribly misted up front headlights, rear wiper motor, basically the entire interior to go back in, and the rear doors need looking at as the manual window winders still dont work. Followed by some attention to the bodywork where it needs a few areas touching up and a good polish, the list does go on... As for the original seats theyre in a pretty bad way I did semi repair the drivers seat with a couple of patches to get it to the stage it was useable but they really are past their best so we will hopefully be in the market for a full set of mk2 fabia seats soon, preferable out of a vrs but would settle for possibly monte carlo ones if the price was right so if anyone knows of anything going reasonably priced let me know!
  9. Hi all, I've got an issue with my Octy, 2012 vrs petrol. It's done 43k miles only had it since last December. Few weeks ago clutch pedal started feeling strange and eventually went completely, I knew the master cylinders were common failures so I've had that replaced, but still no pedal, after bleeding the pedal would feel okay but once the engine was started it would just sink back to the floor again, now we have changed the rubber seals on the master cylinder and re-bled the system and it felt fine for about 8 miles, performed perfectly, but once I got back to the house reversing up the drive slowly (so clutch partially depressed) the pedal has gone again. Tried to bleed yet again but this time goes soft and sticks to floor even before starting the engine. If I lived somewhere normal this wouldn't be a huge problem but I live on a little island off the west coast of Scotland so I've limited options with regard to getting someone to look at it, a friend of mine is a qualified, competent mechanic at the local rocket range and hes been helping me with it but even he is at a loss as to what could be causing the ongoing issue. I'm loathed to get it transported to a garage to have the slave cylinder replaced as this is going to cost me a fortune by the time I factor in the job and logistics. Does anyone have experince of this issue or know anything we might have missed along the way? I am at my wits end with it, I'm lucky I've still got my trusty old 51 plate mk1 diesel or id be right up s***s creek without a paddle!
  10. Morning all, As some of you may have seen on one of the facebook pages recently we recently had the opportunity to purchase a 2004 Fabia vRS with only 91k on the clock, with a view to restoring it back to how it should look as it had been fairly badly neglected by its only previous owner. I will try and keep this up-to-date when work gets done, however we've had the car a good few weeks now and very little has been achieved so far due to work commitments, plenty money spent on parts though, its just trying to find the time to fit them! Progress so far is basically much of the interior stripped out for a deep clean (as when we got hold of it, it looked as if it had never been cleaned in its 13 year life) as well as to aid in repairing the drivers seat which hasn't aged too well at all. The main issue with the car is an intermittent overheating issue, which I believe (and hoping) is caused by the dodgy plastic impellers that were apparently fitted to the water pumps on these engines, so hopefully will be sorted by new water pump / timing belt kit, its overdue to be changed anyway so 2 birds with one stone as they say, other than that just lots of little issues like window mechanisms, door locks etc... bodywork needs a bit of attention but nothing major. Also space in the garage is getting less and less as the pile of parts gets bigger and bigger, theres more in the house too! Not much else to tell for now, waiting really to get timing belt and water pump done as a priority. Peter.
  11. Happy New Year to everyone, I hope that you all had a nice night / day and here's to a good 2017! So, here's some proof that I have absolutely no will-power whatsoever, I picked this up a few weeks ago; my excuse for not waiting any longer being that it was for sale in Glasgow and myself and a couple of friends were over there for a concert so it was the perfect opportunity, too good to miss! This is my 3rd week with the car now, but the weather has been that horrendous recently that this morning was the first time I've had the opportunity to give it a quick wash and get some half decent pictures, Its the 2.0 TSI engine, with a manual box, interior has the all black trim / seats with red stitching and heated seats, its also got xenon headlights for dipped beam and a few other bits, the only thing its really missing is the maxidot display. Its fitted with front and rear optical parking sensors, but quite honestly they're just annoying, they seem to give 'phantom' beeps when they feel like it and at random when the car is no where near anything which is quite annoying, to the point where I'm usually just hitting the button to turn them off as I put it into reverse.
  12. Thanks, and yeah for its age its in excellent condition, it had been well looked after by uncle before I bought it and it's been fairly trouble free bar a window regulator and a repair to the climatronic system. That fog was like pea soup, and didn't clear for the whole day either!
  13. Thought I'd stick a few pics up, we had bad fog here yesterday which made for some interesting conditions..
  14. Hello to all, I've been a lurker on here for a while, and have already read a lot of interesting threads, so thought it was time to register and say hi. So I've currently got a 2001 Octavia estate 1.9 in blue, its pushing around 105k miles, I bought it off a family member last year who owned it from new so I'm only the second owner, its the work-horse and daily commute car really, I've just sold my A3 recently and planning to be in the market for a Mk2 VRS facelift soon, but hoping to leave it until the depths of winter are over, thats if I can stay off autotrader for more than 5 minutes. Would probably be fair to say we're a Skoda family, both my parents have Skodas, my dad, a 65 plate petrol Octavia VRS estate in silver and my mum a 2005 Fabia, and my Octavia was replaced by a Suberb estate 2.0 TDI by my uncle when I bought his off him. I sold my A3 locally and I live on a wee island off the north west coast of Scotland, so I'm seeing it on the road every day as I work as a driver, I'm trying not to miss it too much, but its not working!! Peter.
