Fabia 130 VRS Juddering Issue & Smoke
MrPomeroy replied to MrPomeroy's topic in Skoda Fabia Mk I (1999-2007)
Back again. I had someone take off my turbo a few weeks ago and I sent it off to checked and rebuilt. Turbo went to a place called Turbo Rebuilt ltd. Their inspection stated that the turbo had suffered extensive oil contamination and this had worn the bearings. They repaired it and fitted new gaskets. I also got a new turbo oil feed pipe as they recommended. Anyway, new oil and filter too and got car back yesterday. No bloody difference! It still stutters and smokes.... Could this still be the turbo? Am at a bit of a loss now... -

Lowish Mpg brim to brim tested
MrPomeroy replied to Tomjones1995's topic in Skoda Fabia Mk I (1999-2007)
When my fabia Vrs Diesel was running properly I usually got around 400 miles for about 42-45 quid (depends on where I filled up) and that was averaging 70-75 mph on mostly motorway runs. Going from Bristol last September on a sunny day to Northampton I stuck it at 70 max both ways and the trip computer said 71 mpg average, though I am not sure how accurate that really is. As I now own an Audi TT 2.0 petrol that old figure looks bloody lovely to me! -
My skoda is now off the road and I have bought something else, but I have been toying with the idea of getting a 2nd hand engine and turbo and then using it as a high miler workhorse. How viable do you think this is and would it be insanely expensive? I know a good mechanic who is not that expensive but very capable. Just wondering before I get rid of it. Interested to know what people think and maybe keep a VRs on the road. Cheers Car is a fabia VRS diesel btw....

Are you still interested in my VRs as I have found a new car? Let me know. Cheers Admiral -
fair point. When you also get an estimating department price a biggish job light and you have to make it work, that is a complete crap sandwich too...

Dont fancy going into contracts management? From experience it was more stress and a lot more hours for not much more pay, but on the position side it was indoor work with no heavy lifting positive side! ....

I started as a sparky apprentice, approved spark etc. Like you I didn't fancy sticking it out till retirement
-
Diversify, try and get into M&E Consulting and out of contracting.

Steve
Are you still interested in my Fabia Vrs, or I might part-x it?
Cheers

ok, sounds good. I am based in Cardiff, that an issue? Had new front drive shafts and CV joints put on it about 2 months ago. 4 good tires in last 6 months, no error codes etc. Its been such a good car! Waiting to find out about a car I am looking at and will have an idea of time frame. -

given the mileage and the cars I am looking at replacing it with I cant part-ex it, so it may have to be scrapped. -

Right. After many weeks of faffing about with it my mechanic has told me to get rid of it. He took the turbo off, pipes etc. and said turbo was blowing and not compressing properly, pipes and egr full of carbon and intercooler and pipes very oily. Has MOT january and he said it wont pass. Still drives ok if you stay off the turbo otherwise there is juddering and smoke. Shame, as i love that car and was hoping to get 300000 out of it 😞 -

Last weekend I put new oil and filter, plus ran some sea foam though it on motorway for 200 miles before hand. Just after servicing it felt better and ran better, but after a few days it is back to normal. Will give it to my friendly mechanical to diagnose in the next 2 weeks and see if it is terminal or not. It is now on 272,000 miles. Until this issue always ran sweet and I services it 3 times a year with good oil, Bosch filters etc. 80% of mileage is on motorway since I got it 210,000 miles ago. Scanner turned up but need an adapter for VAG cars, typical, despite what manufacturer says. Still, reset the engine light on my colleagues mondeo prior to MOT, so at least someone is happy :-) -

I have done a scan but nothing appears so have ordered a much better reader a mate of mine has and I was impressed with. See if that shows anything. Tried some seafoam through the induction system yesterday which was entertaining but so far no luck. Will try a engine flush and oil change on weekend. Failing that it is going to my mechanical so he can try and find what the issue is before it fails MOT in January due to emissions. He also said it could be the injector loom that sits in oil that could be brittle, or blocked/knacked injector or turbo. Will see what happens in the next few weeks. Would like to keep my VRS though. -

Thanks for everyone's input. I am fairly sure now it is not an injector, runs too smoothly and I can still cruise at 80+ (not in UK obviously), should I wish to do so without juddering (probably). It makes sense now after the advice from Sepulchrave that when I am in low gears about town I dont notice it. But after 3rd or so it can be quite bad with lots of smoke. The turbo isn't audible at that time but in the drive with no load you can hear it perfectly. I am struggling to find a decent diagram online of what pipes do what and what is connected to the turbo, does anyone know of one? Thanks P -

when the car is on the drive and in neutral and you gibe it some welly is revs fine and you can hear the turbo whistle normally, so I thought it had to be something else other than turbo -
ok

sorry, never got a response to the first thread! Though I would try another topic :-)

VNT? -
In lower gears it is not too noticeable unless I floor it but certainly in 3rd onwards I get a noticeable judder when accelerating. Especially if I am at higher speeds i.e. going on to a motorway or when on a motorway start to go up hill. Also get more black smoke when the juddering happens. On Saturday i took it out and was doing 3500 in 4th and it ran ok, but it is when you lift off and accelerate to that speed again it judders. All very odd..

With the current issue I have with my 06 VRS I am now thinking it may be a blocked injector. Does anyone have experience of changing one? I have seen the You tube videos and don't fancy it myself, plus injectors new are about 600 quid each! Wondering if it is time to scrap the car. Have put 2 cans of Seafoam through it with about 2/3 a tank of fuel, will drive tomorrow on motorway in 4th mainly to see if It will help. 270,700 miles and it may be the end of the road for the VRS 😞
