  1. wilsonian's post in G250 Steering Angle sensor fault was marked as the answer
Thought I'd provide an update regarding this fault.

To try and rule out the G250 sensor I swapped it off my wifes 1.4 TDi (which has the same rack system), unfortunately the fault remained so I spoke to euro car parts who informed me that the rack might be faulty due to it being off center before installing it into the car (we originally had concerns about this but spoke to the company who ECP used to re-con these rack and was given duff info). The rack was swapped out (only the rack, not the pump or sensor) and the intermittent fault vanished. Unfortunately 3 days later my car decided to drop it's fluid over the course of the day and we discovered the same seals where faulty on the new rack as well.

We again spoke to ECP who upgraded the rack from a Q-Drive to a Remy rack. Physically I can't tell the difference (except it came with track rod arms this time and was packaged better). The car is now running on this rack and so far it's been OK - fingers crossed.
  2. wilsonian's post in Timing Belt kit? was marked as the answer
I do think it is a "get out of jail free card" by using the excuse of poor fitting. I didn't realise the product on that site was a gates kit. Thanks for the link
