  1. Yes that the old tensioner that will eventually grenade the engine. Only the US and a couple of other countries have some sort of recall, but you won't get Skoda to acknowledge it exists even if you type it in Google Infront of them. You just have to suck it up and pay for the K revision tensioner and costs £700-£1100 depending on where you go. Or about £300-£400 in Genuine parts if you do it yourself. You just have the pcv, rear main seal, intake manifold, balance shafts to add to the list as well 🤣. Bought my 2009 car in 2018 for 4k and have probably spent 5k on the engine 🤦
  2. I get what youre saying, but Audi specifically used different pistons in the longitudinal engines so the pistons fix doesnt necessarily cover the rest of the VAG group. Uprated piston rings 100% for all VAG gen 1/2 engines as i have done it myself, but not pistons for a daily car unless you're forging it as it isnt worth it. I rebuilt my engine in 2019 and its not worth it day to day especially as people are starting to get balance shaft failures just to add to the timing chain woes.
  3. Thats sounds like your rear mainseal has failed. It can do it after a pcv failure or the glue on the seal just seperates due to age (the new revision is sandwiched toprevent this happening). Its an easy fix albeit expensive labour costs. My clutch was covered in oil so needed replacing as well. Heres me diagnosing mine after two dealers and two indy garages couldnt work out what the problem was. https://youtu.be/dTRXkwSwbxM
  4. Many people suffering balance shaft failures on these yet? I just started tracking my 2009 ccza 2.0 tsi and got low oil pressure. Dropped the sump and found small crumbly type pieces of aluminium (nothing ferrous). Going into a specialist this week hopefully, but believe one of the balance shafts has seized due to high oil temp and possible starvation when i went hard round a turn. Seems to be creeping into road cars as well depending on servicing and other factors. What an engine eh? Haha Previously has new rear main seal and pcv due to failure, new intake valves due to the failure and preventative maintenance of camchain and tensioner as well as bearing and piston rings whilst they were in there. Spent more on the engine than what the car is worth since i bought in December 2019. Good blog from a garage regarding the balance shafts going with almost identical pictures of debris to mine. http://robisonservice.blogspot.com/2019/06/timing-chain-and-balance-shaft-failures.html
  5. For a start the previous owner is lying to you. These cars either use lots of oil or they dont. The fact you're losing oil straight away wouldnt happen over night so im unsure what reasoning they have for lying to you. I had the cam chain/tensioner and rings changed on my 2.0 TSI vRS as preventative maintenance when i had some worn valves replaced. Even though i had the latest recommended revision VW piston rings the car still uses oil but a lot less (around 0.5l every 1000km. I also installed an oil catch can and you can tell there is a lot of oil blow by due to the amount being deposited in the can. Apparently changing the pistons as well fully fixes the issue but is mainly for Audi engines which have the engine seated differently. If you have this work done it should be worth it if youre going to keep the car for two years or so as you will not make any money back if you sell it. Buying any second hand car
  6. Sorry to resurrect an old thread but many thanks tech1e for this advice. Managed to open my bonnet today after over extending my handle which popped the metal sleeve off the cable in the bowden connector.
  7. Apart from the class action lawsuit in the US which resulted in a total recall of the tensioner due to the amount failing 🙈
  8. The main issues the Gen1 TSI from 2009 has can include Tensioner Chain stretch Rear main seal failure Intake manifold Piston rings Pcv failure (which caused rear main seal failure). Water pump (generally the seal) z but is in the centre of the engine under the intake manifold so a PITA) I had the pcv fail causing the rear main seal to fail and throw oil on the clutch. My chain was also stretch but the original tensioner had made it to 100k. If these items have been replaced which youre finding with some of the older ones then you wont have issues. The sad state is that skoda dealers and lots of clueless people still hide behind the camchain and tensioner being a lifetime part. https://www.shopdap.com/blog/post/vw-audi-20t-tsi-common-problems.html
  9. It may be worth looking at the manufacture date on the sticker in the boot. You should be ok if the car was built from say June 2012.
  10. Just an update in case anyone else comes across this thread weeks or months down the line with a similar problem i have traced the fault to a blown rear main seal. I created a video on how to diagnose it in VCDS is anyone is interested. ****I mention the throttle changing the fuel when i actually mean the ecu as the throttle is obviously the air!****
  11. So Ive been going back to basics to check everything over and one of those tests was to cover the diaphragm pressure regulator hole on the PCV. Im led to believe this should not change pitch etc when covered. Mine seems to make a whirring noise albeit very faint as if there could be a small tear in the diaphragm? I'm wondering if because its so small it generally operates ok until high revs when the air flow and pressure in the engine is highest? Also the blow by on the oil cap seems quite excessive! Also pulling the dipstick out doesnt do anything to the idle which ive read mean my engine is already adapted to too much air in the system. see here Let me know what you guys thing?
  12. Unfortunately ive only driven it 200 miles since getting it. Its going to a VAG specialist for a diagnostic @ £80 per hour as the garage who did the cam chain and injectors were at a loss! I suppose you get what you pay for. Ill keep you updated. Fingers crossed its just a leak but i went over and under the car physically checking all the pipe work from turbo/intercooler and intake and couldnt find anything. Annoying to say the least as it drives fantastic off boost now.
  13. Apologies i did the above post on my phone and i thought i copied and pasted the error codes over Just as a bit of background:- Previous owner replaced the following items between March - July 2018 - Throttle body, intake manifold, PCV Valve and tubing, fuel filter (possibly wiring harness to the coil packs) - Chasing this error code? well never know... Between December 2018 and January 2019 i have replaced the cam chain and tensioner as it was 5 degrees out on stretch, all four injectors, all four coil pack, plugs Heres a before chain replacement and after (ignore the last few seconds as there was a road sweeper driving by!) Ok i had some time on Saturday to go through the codes again which i can reproduce every time i drive the car. P0302 has been showing up since i purchased the car, but there was a strong smell of fuel so i had all the injectors replaced (garage where i bought it from paying labour and one injector for cylinder 2) P130A would only come on if you drove the car for a long time on boost as it shuts down the cylinder to protect the engine. P0507 has only appeared since i had my injectors and cam chain replaced last week although the end result with the above video has always been the same. The car drives great now until you floor it under boost and then something is causing it to misfire like mad. Im going to re align the throttle body and potentially check the PCV even though its less than a year old and not whistling or anything. Is this all helpful to make some suggestions?
  14. I thought some of you may find this interesting. I had my tensioner replaced on my 2009 car. I recorded a quick video of the original tensioner and was amazed with the movement on the band and you can literally flick it off with your fingernail.
