  1. Thanks for the reply, appreciated. I'll have a gander when I next service the Octa, may be worth a check too as I've still got a very slight oil leak, but nothing significant. Thankfully the belt remains oil free so far after replacing the seal. Thanks again
  2. Hi, I managed to sort the majority of my issue by replacing the crankshaft oil seal as described above. Followed a YouTube tutorial and replaced the seal. Took a good few hours due to getting the wrong seal initially. I purchased a crank shaft pulley tool from ebay and cut the handle down to size as I was working on axel stands. The official vw tool is somewhat expensive and managed to find a 3rd party equivalent for around £20. I'm approx 2000miles in after doing the work and all seems to be OK from the oil seal at the moment. I still have a very minor leak but I suspect that's from elsewhere. If I were to do it again, I would replace the pulley while I'm at it for peace of mind.
  3. From further research it should be a relatively straightforward job to do. Thanks again for the suggestion.
  4. Thanks for the reply, I'll look into that. Was yours an engine out job?
  5. Hi guys. Been a while since I've frequented the forum but could do with some thoughts and advice. Have a 2011 1.8tsi. I've had a slow oil leak for the last few months on the left had side (as you face the engine bay) of the engine. Its leaking around the belt and being flung all around the left hand side of the bay. I've had it into two separate garages who've either said it was the sump plug leaking or the filler cap needing replacing. So far none of these fixes have rectified the issue. Its not leaking a massive amount of oil, I'm concerned about the damage and further issues it may cause. I've included some pictures hopefully to illustrate. Anyone any ideas as what is likely to be the culprit? Cheers
  6. Excellent. Thanks for that. I'll have a browse of those files. Thankfully I have plenty of time before the car will require servicing. I'll browse the forum more to learn as much as possible. Overall I love the car, just need a head unit upgrade so I can get the bluetooth phone connectivity working.
  7. Thanks again. I have just located the engine details PDF which details the oils quantities. It's the first car I've owned I haven't been able to buy a Haynes manual for carrying out work. So just trying to source as much information as possible to help me when I need to do a service. Only got the car back on Monday so shouldn't have to do it for some time. Much appreciated.
  8. Thanks for that. I have looked in the sticky thread you have mentioned. Didnt see amount of oil required for service, I will have a look through again and doubt check. I am very lucky indeed, have to say i really like the car and the engine feels strong and spritley. I was even provided with a breakdown of the work done to the engine and cost, for my own peace of mind after having researched about the required fix for the pip consumption issue. I will have a look at 502.00 oil Thanks for your reply.
  9. Hi All, I recently purchased a 1.8TSI 2011. After doing some initial research I asked the dealer to replace the cam chain etc for peace of mind. I experienced the dreaded oil consumption issues (lesson learned more research next time round), however I have been very lucky with the indy dealer I purchased the car from. They initially replaced the PCV to try and solve the issue, as we can all guess this didnt work. I have now received my car back after have the engine out, head work, pistons, rings, con rods, bearings, another cam chain etc etc (all at dealers expense). So far so good, I am hoping this issue is now fully sorted as my research would seem to support. My question is, I will be doing most of the services myself, but I am struggling to find any decent comprehensive information on service schedule and parts. Does anyone have any links to a workshop manual or a good comprehensive list of oil type and amount, filter, plugs part numbers? Also importantly, do I stick to the 5w30 LL castrol or a thicker 10w40 as I have seen on some posts? I have used the search tool on the site but didnt come up with anything from what I could tell. Any pointers or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Andi
  10. Thanks Oldmansomerset. Much appreciated
  11. Hi all, Just popping in to say hello. The forum has already been of great use in the past few weeks, on the run up to acquiring my new (to me) octavia 1.8TSI. It's an 11 plate in pretty good condition, had the timing chain replaced as part of the conditions of me purchasing the car. Just picked up the car today and really enjoying it so far, nice bit of grunt compared to my previous motor. I've had various cars over the years, but lately I've had a couple of EcoBoost fiestas on finance. Glad to see the back of those deals and looking forward to being able to work and maintain my own car once more, like i have in the past. So I'm sure these forums will be a God send. I enjoy car detailing when I get time, visited waxstock this weekend for the 3rd year. Cheers all!
