  1. Hi, thanks for your reply. My A/C doesn't work (compressor gubbed). Strangely enough with the recent cold snap, the noise hasn't been happening. This makes me think its a pipe underneath the car rattling when the car is hot. I haven't taken the covers off underneath to check fuel lines, etc for looseness...... maybe a good starting point. It does sound metallic, like I said, something like a heat shield.
  2. Hi, it rattles only in the 1800-2500 RPM range. Does it when driving mostly. Can get it to do it when stationary, but doesn't do it all the time.
  3. Happy New Year to you all !!! I own a Mk2 Fabia vRS, CAVE engine. For a few months now it has had a metallic rattle between 1800-2500 RPM. It sounds like a loose heat shield would if it vibrated against the body. I've had it up on a ramp. There are no loose heat shields or thin metal items anywhere. I mentioned it to my mechanic and he had a poke around and was unable to find anything loose either. I remember somewhere on the forum someone mentioned rattling from fuel pipes or similar. I can see that there are covers on the underside of the body which run the length. Would there be anything under them like pipes or heat shields? Any idea or similar solved issues? (if it helps any, I had the Mechatronics rebuilt in Dec, but the sound existed before and after that so I don't think they're connected). Also, I mentioned to my mechanic that there is a knocking at low speeds on ROS corner (as if a drop link had failed). He had a look and said that there are no rear drop links ! He suggested a "noisy shocker". Any ideas ??? Thanks in anticipation. Stay Safe
  4. Sittingbull, Sounds like you've been through the mill on your Fabia. I don't know what to suggest other than keep on keeping on......good luck !
  5. Sittingbull, looks like I'm one of the lucky ones. I really hope you get sorted without too much more pain. Fingers crossed for you 🤞
  6. Also, if anyone wants a VRS personalised plate, mines in the classified for £150 all in 👍
  7. UPDATE To all the forum users, firstly a Happy New Year (Chinese) and Happy Burns Night (Scottish). Just a quick update on this thread.... After my initial panic and with the help of you all I can now confirm that the CAVE isn't an oil burner like I feared !!! I've done a few low-tech oil consumption tests and they all seem to indicate minimal oil consumption. I can live with the occasional small top up every 2k or so. So just to say thanks to all those who took the trouble to answer my posts. You're all very appreciated 😁
  8. Hi Kobayashi, Although I eventually intend a remap, at the moment I just need to sort the oil consumption issue and how good/bad the engine is. The compression test was one angle to try. As always, your reply and help is appreciated.
  9. Found this link to previous topic Only issue seems to be there's a fair amount of differing views in the responses. The consensus seems to be : test with plugs out. There a mention of throttle being open, removing fuse 30, etc ??? I'm guessing from reading this that there is no "exact" figure, but as long as the cylinders are more or less the same then that's fine......
  10. Hi all, Looking to carry out a compression test on my mk2 Fabia as part of a range of tests to prove/disprove excessive oil consumption. Does anyone know what the average and optimum readings per cylinder are likely to be? Just need a benchmark for comparison. Many thanks as always......
  11. Hi Madvlad65, Roottootemoot has previously stated to me that the oil needs to conform to VW502 standards. I think I remember he said 5w30 also, but maybe you should check direct with him. Failing that, I'm sure a Google search will find the correct oil grade, or some suppliers offer suggested oils based on your car details/reg. I would check the correct grade yourself, although I bought mine following a reg check on Euro Car Parts so ended up 5w40. Good luck....
  12. Hi Oz Fabia, Thanks for the info. Once I've finished my "test" I will see where the oil level ends up and measure how much I have to top up. With any luck that should also give me an idea of the max/min difference. Thanks for your reply and help....
  13. Roottootemoot, While I think of it.....a while back you advised me on the correct oil type saying it had to conform to VW 502 standard. I checked the Shell Helix I bought and it does comply. Thanks for the heads up and advice !
  14. Hi Wino, I know it's not "high tech" but it should work.......and all it cost me was the oil and a 35p plastic jug from Asda !!! Cheaper than an official dealer test. The reason I asked for the full/empty capacity on dipstick is a mate with a 1.4 Tsi Golf said he thinks it's only 500-600ml. When you have 4 litres in to start, you can afford to lose the odd 500ml without an engine disaster..... That's my thinking anyway. Could be proved very wrong.......🙄
  15. Hi Roottootemoot, Yeah, this was what kicked the whole oil consumption panic off in the first place......I'd done about 2k miles and saw that if used 2/3 of the engine oil. This was when I first came across the forum and the issues with the CAVE engine. Admittedly, my car was parked in different places in the work car park do the levels varied depending on the spot I parked. That's why I'm trying to park in the same spot through the testing. The master plan once the 2k test is done will be to drain oil, refill to exact capacity and repeat 2k test. Cheers again for taking the time to reply.
