Power Steering Dangerous? Electrical? (thank you) • Skoda Fabia Mk II 2011
Hi Guys hope you had a good week. Been busy so just getting round to work on this "Hunt for the Blue Wire" couple of things: FIrst, I have power steering. It steers. Dunno what I was thinking or whatnot. Yesterday I over-clutched ina fiddly car park and the engine turned off, was on a hill going into a space. Decided to let it roll - THEN I found out what it's like with no power steering. Second, with some reflection, I realised this ALL began AFTER I had the good ship Halford's out to replace my battery (due to the infuriating alarm going off constantly, that I removed myself). It is clearly electrical, as you've said. I feel like the guy at the garage is well intended (he pushed through an MOT while everything was workin), but he kept going on about some expensive electrical switch *mentioned) that was tied somehow to the car itself by programming and was mad expensive to replace. (!?) Now, Blue wire: Before I go spending and digging through manuals, can you please give me a hint what/where I'm looking for? Below are photos of the blue wires I can find thus far... Behind the battery? Feeeding into the wee connector on the front of the battery? same one better view Curiously hanging free coming from under the battery seems to swing up behind the alternator? Alternator connector had a blue one... Thanks as always @Breezy_Pete @varooom @KenONeill @nta16! Martin

Power Steering Dangerous? Electrical? (thank you) • Skoda Fabia Mk II 2011
Hi guys So, got the car back. The one thing this garage did was get it right long enough to pass me an MOT. That's a worry off the plate. He said that there was an electric switch or box mechanism that goes with the car that needed replacing and was too expensive vs. the actual value of the car. This seems odd to me - I thing he may just not be a Skoda expert. He said (as you'bve mentioned) an electrical problem is not getting energy to the power steering. @Breezy_Pete to your point and @KenONeill: no battery icon at startup - as per the video below. I may look on how to check the alternator control wires...or is that something that has to be done in a garage? @KenONeill "As for the PAS, can you cope with the sudden increase in steering weight? " When the light is off, the steering is fine. Even with it on, it's just a bit heavier - not really difficult. I am thinking if this is just for short jaunts around my small town, just drive the thing until I can get this electrics sorted? I think you're all onto something here. thanks as always M Skoda MII.mp4

I honestly did not pay attention enough to say. But will confirm. Electrical problem, that is? If this is the culprit, and he hasn't repalced whatever electrical switch...who around here might repair it?

>I don;t think it's true either, but don;t think he's saying it deliberately - No, no battery light. I actually had the battery replaced when I was trying to silence that alarm (which I ripped out myself haha). However, will have it back Monday and can say for sure PS. He did say there was some electrical 'switch' needin replacing - I'll have to get the name and IF he did it when I pick it up

Power Steering Dangerous? Electrical? (thank you) • Skoda Fabia Mk II 2011
Hi Everyone, Kind thanks for all your support on this forum, MUCH appreciated, especially @Breezy_Pete & @nta16 I hope to return the favour./help in any way I can. (I bought this car in faith that it would need a few bits along the way, but not all this. And to be honest, a part of the reason I bought it was to be able to do charity work. Am on a budget, so was just trying to get started). Problem: Heartbreaking. During recent extreme cold (Dec, -5c) amber power steering light comes on. Steering very tight/groggy. Steering loosens and gets better after it gets warm and is driven a bit, but light remained on). notes: Car does have some kind of electrical probs going on, I was aware of, see "Garage" below. Steps taken: 1. Did the "reset" by turning wheel far left and right as suggested in the forum. Had Halford's out to replace new battery (as explained in this Briskoda post here ), and do all the checks = no change. Garage: Took to highly recommended garage. They've taken off the pump and said needs replacing. Tried to send for refurb, and the refurb says they cannot repair/replace because it is apparently somehow "tied to the specific car's computer" ? Garage result: after having it taken off and on, (possibly just cleaning it up or summat), the light is no longer on. The Garage is going to do me a quick MOT to pass so I can go from there (they suggest trading it asap). --They also say I needed some electrical switch replaced which is around £200. Am not sure if they are doing this, will confirm). Questions/possible repairs: A. Is it true that these units are somehow "bound" to the car? B. I saw in this Briskoda forum post here, by @UrbanPanzer a link to the new part. Can I just buy it and have it simply replaced? https://www.skoda-parts.com/spare-part/6r0423156b-power-steering-pump-trw-germany-oe-producer-23195.html https://www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/oem/6r0423156b C. If I get it back, and the light stays off, am I good? D. If I get it back, and the amber light comes back on, is it dangerous to drive? Thanks in advance for any/all help. Hope you're having a good weekend. Martin

Alarm going off on a Sunday, in front of the church. (newbie)
@nta16 @Breezy_Pete Thanks Nigel and Pete. The report is, I stopped checking the computer, and opened up that bonnet, took up the plastic skuttle cover (?) and removed the thing. MIRACLES! I just didn't feel confident messing about with the fuses and having it go off anymore - some of my neighbours are elderly and it got late in the afternoon. I'll have it in the garage 5 January and let them sort it, but I feel very empowered - am not a newbie to cars just to Skoda and such. I noticed in another thread someone was saying they replaced with one made in Italy. Italy is also marked on mine. Appears someone's replaced this already. The fellow this morning could not get any readings from the computer reader - so, we'll see how we figure this out... But yes indeed Nigel, I'll do anmother post/theared and shre what I've learned, and what I find out. Taking the thing out was slightly fiddly without removing the wiper arms, but not really that bad. 30-45mins? You just prop it to one side, and I got something to press the left side up high torquining the plastiuc without breaking anything. One thing to watch out for: the windscreen spray hose is clips with a tiny zip tie to the alarm bracket. Must be cut first lest you rip the spray hose up. More soon, and really guys, THANK YOU. Martin

Alarm going off on a Sunday, in front of the church. (newbie)
Hi Pete and NTA - so, update. Battery replaced. Siren goes off still. Changed key fob batteries. Went off again. I think thankfully there's a timeout on it or I'd lose my mind - I only have hearing in one ear and this is excruciating. I also disconnected the main battery. Stranegly, I went to pull fuse number 46. There's not one there! Could this be the issue? The garage that was checking it out for me was testing down there a few days before this started? could they have left out a fuse? Otherwise, Pete, I may try your fuse 54. I may just have to cancel my Christmas plans... Dunno. I am tempted to just open thte top and remove the darn siren. It's a 2011, is not mint necessarily, and I don't leave anything of value in the car. This is too upsetting and I can't keep disturbing the neigbours. thanks for any further ideas.

Hi Pete thanks for this! Thankfully no start/stop! I need to go out and check what amp it has. Sorry if that diagram is off it's just what I found and seemed reasonable... I'll let you know what I come up with! Martin

Alarm going off on a Sunday, in front of the church. (newbie)
Thank you very kindly for this. I booked a good-ole Halford's to come replace the battery and few other things. (I am quite handy and capable but just need to limit the stress here). You are one of several who have pointed to this so here's hopin' and praying! I've got a slight disability that the siren just hammers me - am almost a mind to just clip the wires to the thing. It's an older car, I never leave anything of value in it, and it's not insured for anything except for Third Party. I'm going to also do the synchronise - will let you know. I did find what seems to be a good link for fuses in general, and has a great diagram, if, as you say, it is correct... https://www.servicetutorials.com/2022/04/14/tutorial-skoda-fabia-mk2-2007-2014-fuse-panel-box-location-diagram/#:~:text=The fuse box is located, screwdriver to open the cover.&text=If playback doesn't begin shortly%2C try restarting your device. Alarm going off on a Sunday, in front of the church. (newbie)
Sorry I just figured out how to quote a post: Hi Nta16 - thanks for all that will try. You know - it keeps coming back to that battery, I think tomorrow I'll just go ghet a new one. It's a used car - cannot hurt. The other electrical problem - the extreme cold last week got the power steering real tight, and the power sterring light came on. Took it to the shop and they said it's safe to drive but an electrical switch that needs replacing. I didn't ask what kind of switch, whether it is for the whole car or just the power sterring - this may be the issue. This garage is highly reputable around here and recommended by several trusted neighbours - they just don't have openings until 5 January. I've got to make it 'til then... After I bought it I noticed the mirror adjuster switch does not work for the passenger side, nor the passenger door window work. (I can lower the passenger from the driver side). It all points electrical. The car wasn't treated too nicely by the former owner, which is sad because it's a nice car, and I like it. Thank you again , any further suggestion most welcome... (Ps. if I remove the fuse to the alarm system will it make th thing go quiet if I'm in a public place again? That was just awful. ) Hi mate, thank you for this. It's so far still quiet I will test again tomorrow God willing it's remaining quiet. I know there's another minor electrical problem I am due to have repaired on 5th Jan. Hopefully it'll keep til then. My heart sank cause I just bought this used, and the guy seemed ok, but I wonder if there were known issues... BUT, this has all happened after about 2 months so... who knows? Thanks again. PS. I just couldn't figure if me hold that key in the driver door turned to the left for that long time actually did something...

Alarm going off on a Sunday, in front of the church. (newbie)
HI all, And thanks for help on other forums. Newbie here. Skoda Fabia 2011 Just was across from the church at the market (just in time for Christams services to be in). Opened boot with key fob, put in bags, closed boot. Used fob to open door, got in, put key in ignition, strted engine. Alarm goes off and will not stop. Turn off engine, start engine. Alarm wevery 15 seconds (cycling). Tried pressing fob buttons. Alarm still going. -A helpful guy said get out, lock the car with key, then unlock. no dice. (at this point I am upsetitng the whole village). Tried many times turning lock with actual key, on, off locked, unlocked. Nothing. Decided to just drive home. Alarms all the way. Go home, turned off engine. Still going. Got out. (Slammed the heck out of the door). then, out of frustration inserted the key and turned as if to lock it, and just held it there for like 15 secs. Alarm stopped. Remembered my groceries in boot (argh). Used fob, got groceries, closed boot. Locked with fob. All good (praying). Still thankfully, no alarm. Any ideas? Did I mess up by unlocking the boot then pressing again for the door at the first instance? Perhaps hit a fob button while starting the engine? DO you think holding the key to the left while locking actually stopped it? BIG QUESTION: should this happen again, how on earth can I make it stop? Disconnect the battery? I read the manual - pretty useless. I pressed the unlock many times while in the car and nothing happen to stop the alarm. Thanks all around folks. My nerves are gone tonight.

Right Reverse Light Fault + wire gauge question.... New Here!
Thanks for all the info - sorry took so long to get back...work... and yes, I might be upgrading at xsome stage. EXCELLENT advice on the battery! Thanks! I been ordering some switch fixes and such and spent an intimate evening with the manual. Any idea on where"s credible to download a repair manual? (too many cowboy sites out there).

OOOOOOOKAY. Nothing makes you feel old like a car made since 1979. (My first in the USA was a 1974 Ford Thunderbird deluxe which sat 8 comfortably and had an 8 cylinder truck engine. 20mpg!) Thank you all again. It helped to re-check the bulb which was out. all this started when I got a replacement light lens housing cause some numpty had cracked the old one. With ONE (!) reverse light...I'mma use the hazards in car parks. I hope my green "P" (never bothered to get my UK licence til now, after 20 years) alerts folk! Am really grateful to find this forum and you all - I actually love this motor and plan to tinker like a pro-pensioner (not quite there yet!). Have a lovely Saturday Sko-mateys!

Thank you Nigel, I used that link to look up the VIN, and it says Fabia II very hlpful. So I am reckining this is indeed a 'MK II' ? could this be more confusing? haha. I feel so, so, NEW.
