Thanks to everyone on this thread for the tips, especially in the video about the third screw hidden behind the button. I didn't want to dismantle the mechanism too much - I knew I'd lose the spring somewhere so what I did was to clean up the moving parts, squirt of brake cleaner followed by a little WD40. I then took the spring out of a biro, shortened it a bit and added it to the spring at the front right* thus giving a bit more force and BINGO! It might not last if the biro spring stretches but at least I know what to do. Mine is a left hand drive model so could be the opposite side on a RHD.
