  1. Mystery solved, grajay I believe you are looking at the final statement regarding engine oil repeated here; If the above engine oils are not available, a different engine oil can be used in an emergency. To prevent damage to the engine, a maximum of 0.5 litres only of the following engine oils may be used: ■ For petrol engine models: ACEA A3/ACEA B4 or API SN, (API SM); ■ For diesel engine models: ACEA C3 or API CJ-4. The previous page lists the correct vw specifications.
  2. If you look again at my post # 8 you will see that I was reinforcing the point made by Offski. It would be madness to take any car that had been standing for idle for a few years and just drive away expecting to get another 2 years on variable service from the original oil. The oil in the idle car has not been kept in anywhere near ideal conditions and needs to be changed before putting the car to use. All the synthetic oil manufacturers that I know of give 5 years as the recommended shelf life, so that 5 years would be vastly reduced in this example of an idle car being put to use. I am in no way knocking synthetic oils, they are sophisticated pieces of engineering - the best thing since sliced bread as far as I am concerned
  3. If you google 'shelf life synthetic oil' there is masses of info.
  4. I was thinking a Chinese / Indian or similar, translation
  5. The VAG system for warning lights is; Red: you should stop the car as soon as it's safe. Yellow: action is required. Green:for information only. With our 1.8tsi It was intermittent, we called it 'the helicopter light'. Fitting a new oxygen sensor, also called Lambda Sensor, in the exhaust system cured it in our case. The garage may say just continue driving until we have time to fix. [it should be their decision, to cover you]
  6. From the 2015 manual; Vehicles with variable service intervals Petrol engines Specification 1.2 l/81 kW TSI 1.4 l/92, 110 kW TSI VW 504 00 Vehicles with fixed service intervals Petrol engines Specification 1.2 l/81 kW TSI 1.4 l/92, 110 kW TSI VW 502 00 1.6 l./81 kW MPI Are you perhaps looking at a non UK manual?
  7. If you ask nicely, can they not offer a courtesy car? It is not your fault they have messed up! Generally I have always found Scandinavians very reasonable people. Good Luck, and Happy New Year.
  8. The safest date to zero from would be the build date. Synthetic oils have a limited shelf life - too old and they become unstable. Not good for a turbo
  9. Absolutely. On the M6 and A74M I have just about given up on using CC. These are the same idiots that pass, then ease off. and pull across the bonnet of our car, leaving a gap of 2 or 3 car lengths. At 70 mph that is way too small a safety envelope. I think it would improve road safety significantly if we all [ including me ] had to retake our driving test every 5 yrs or so. I believe the general standard of driving is falling, Cars are getting increasingly clever - sadly the drivers are not. :notme:
  10. Interesting that the Ateca has the skinny spare wheel - makes a lot of sense.
  11. This is from Auto Bild re; the Ateca 'The other petrol engine will be the 1.4 TSI of 158 hp, with manual or automatic transmission, and available in 4x2 and 4x4 traction. The all-wheel-drive versions and the DSG change will be optional'. Once again, the UK importers can not be bothered with petrol motors. If you do not want a diesel motor you have very limited choice. Why?
  12. Over the last 18yrs we have purchased 4 new VAG cars and specified long-life oil from the factory. We have followed the 'oil change due' indication and always used long-life oil. 2 of these cars had the 1.8tsi engine. The first had the elastomer cam belt and the other the chain, both ran well for 100k hard mls before being sold on. None of these engines suffered any mechanical damage or excessive oil use. Were we just lucky, who knows? Guess which oil type we will continue to use? You pay your money – you make the choice.
  13. The output from a battery falls off sharply at low temperature. I would guess that is one reason for the felt type insulation. Help to reduce the cold winter effect, and also reduce any high under-bonnet temperature effect. My old Jaguar had its own thermostatically controlled cooling fan on the battery box. Batteries have come on a lot since then.
  14. Hi Paul. If you google 'reset yeti mirrors' you will find some earlier discussions. It is corrected by resetting the windows closing by your remote basically. Hope that fixes it for you.
  15. I lived and worked in Norway from 1981 to 2000. In those 20 yrs I used the Newcastle/Stavanger/Bergen route once a year on average. I saw the ferry owners and boats change quite a few times, but 4 things were constant. The boats were always old - but clean. In summer so full, often difficult to book if not quick. In any month of the year the freight section was full. There would be a few Norwegians using the boat to shop in Newcastle. [even had a Norwegian Consulate in Newc.] I get the impression the big money is now in cruise ships. The way things are going I may buy a small boat, winch the Yeti on board and away.
  16. The prime purpose of mud flaps was never to do with keeping your car clean. It was a safety issue regarding visibility or not, out of following vehicles.
  17. I tried to get this into the Motoring news but it would not go. There is a website http://www.startauktonorwayferry.co.uk/ trying to organise a new car/freight ferry to Norway for those interested.
  18. Thanks mumpsim, [oh to go back to 1956 ] Yes I agree, I do not think it was a requirement in the '50's. I found the following in Hansard. Perhaps it is only the various discussions around mudflaps at that time that I remember. Motor Vehicles (Mud-Flaps) HC Deb 06 March 1963 vol 673 cc365-6365 §12. Mr. E. Johnson asked the Minister of Transport whether he has yet reached a decision on whether the present requirement that road motor vehicles should be fitted with mud-flaps can be improved. §Mr. Hay Work is still proceeding on this matter. §Mr. Johnson How much longer will this work proceed? The matter has been under consideration for over six weeks. Is not my hon. Friend aware that wet roads make motoring not only unpleasant but extremely dangerous, especially on high-speed roads? What are the difficulties about defining the type of motor car or motor vehicle which should use a mud-flap when on a public road? §Mr. Hay The difficulty is that practical experimental work has to be done 366and, as the House will he aware, in recent weeks we have suffered not from rainy conditions, but from snow and ice. The experimental work has, therefore, been held up, but we are getting on with the matter as quickly as we can. §Mr. Johnson Is not my hon. Friend aware that mud-flaps have been used on many motor cars for many years? What further experiment is required to reach a decision? §Mr. Hay We need experimental work to decide whether mud-flaps are the best answer to the problem or whether something better could be provided. The Statutory Instruments - The Road Vehicles Construction and Use Regulations of that period I cannot locate on the web, so will go and lie down now
  19. If my foggy memory is correct, there was a legal requirement to have rear mud flaps until sometime in the 1970's. If I am correct, why was that idea dropped?
  20. Unbelievable treatment. If all else fails definitely small claims court. You may need legal advice exactly who to sue. Without looking further, I think it is the dealer, but would check with Trading Standards or Citizens Advice [if they still exist]. If it does go to court I would carry in one of the wheels. They judge(s) love anything to brighten their boring day.
  21. Nice idea. This could be worth exploring if changing the seats to black, assuming no heated or power seat problems. The door cards and arm rests may even look a little 'snazy' left as they are. For those of us that would prefer a sandy colour it would unfortunately be a more complex job. If the spec of the Ateca moves on a little.......
  22. Some friends of mine were also a bit 'iffy'. I showed them some places where the VW and Audi rings were marked [hoses are the easiest]. They switched from a Ford to a Yeti and are over the moon with it
  23. How did Mrs May get in here?
  24. For price comparison, I got mine [all four] 10months ago from superskoda cost 45 Euros including postage. Yeti - heavy duty rubber floor mats, original Skoda Auto,a.s. - RHD Cat no. 5L2061550B
