  1. Hi there,

I'm almost convinced I have a dead/dying wheel bearing on the front drivers wheel. (know its not the tyres as have recently changed and the noise remains)

I have found the part on jorily - 6Q0407621AJ. I was just wondering which other, if any, VAG cars this part is used on? I work in a scrap yard and we often have VAG cars come in so im just wondering whether I could take a wheel hub off another model of car... Would save a bit on buying a new part!

    Many thanks

  2. Hi guys,

Just wondering if these alloys will fit my car..

    For a picture:

16" VOLKSWAGEN VW GOLF GENUINE ALLOY WHEELS AND TYRES on eBay (end time 11-Oct-09 11:13:07 BST)

    they are ET42 part no. 1J0 601 025L

    6.5J 16H2

Tyres on them currently are 205 55s

I have checked out on the tyre calculators on the internet and the difference from my current 175 65 14s and these is about 8.4%. most people recommend less than 5% difference but is it THAT bad? or do you just have to learn to drive a bit slower than the speedo is telling me?

    Cheers

  3. It's VERY confusing. I think they do it on purpose to suck people in. Please, phone them up and tell them what you are planning to do. You'll be put through to a specialist broker who will quote you for YOUR business. You'll need at least 3 policies - Public Liability, Employers Liability and Indemnity. The first two are legal requirements and cover your customers, you and the public against an accident while you are working, the third is optional and covers damaging your customers property because you did a bad job. Public Liability is cheap because you have to have it, and they have to offer it. Employers liability is much more expensive because people do stupid things at work and tend to sue their employers when it happens. You are extremely unlikely to be offered indemnity insurance because you have no 'professional' experience, so your risk loading is very high.

There is basically zero financial risk as you shouldn't have any borrowings at all, but what you are risking is making yourself do lots of work for less than the minimum wage. Think about it - the minimum wage would put you over the personal allowance in 5 months and you don't think you'll get that over the summer? If you are not going to make money out of it then why bother?

You need to do a business plan. Make up a spreadsheet and work out what it's all going to cost you and what the best and worst expected returns are and you'll find that it almost certainly doesn't add up. It sounds negative, and it may well be, but I've done rough calculations and I reckon you need to take at least £60 a car for the listed service above before you start to make more than the minimum wage.

    http://www.coverzones.com/car-valeting-insurance/:

    • Public Liability Insurance for car valeting: This covers you against a claim from members of the public – or a customer – for death, bodily injury or damage to their property, which in your case would include that top of the range Aston DB9 or Porsche 911. The extent of the car valeting cover you need depends on your business and the types of vehicle you are working on: £1m – £5m cover is the usual level of cover.

I'm not trying to argue here but it seems every website I check says that is all we need. We aren't going to be employing anyone so I don't believe we need employers liability but then again I may be wrong.

Anyway thanks for the advice and I will let you know how we get on!

  4. That's just your public liability insurance and it's really for places that have workshops eg. if someone tripped over a cable or something. It wouldn't cover you at a customer's premises and it certainly wouldn't cover claims against you for negligence/damage to cars in the course of your work.

You will also need employers liability insurance, and then you'll need to figure out how you're going to declare your earnings for tax purposes.

Setting up a 'scratch' company is highly likely to cost you a fortune and offset the likely potential income for the first 3-6 months unfortunately.

Depending on how many of you there are then £20 for a wash and polish won't go very far.

There are 2 of you. So let's say you can do 3 cars a day. That's realistic given that you won't get any passing trade, it will all have to be booked in and travelled to and you're talking about hand-polishing cars. I reckon you're looking at 2-3 hours work per vehicle. So I'm thinking £60 a day between you, £210 a week each, working 7 days or £150 working 5 days. Take off £25 each for fuel, £20 a week for consumables etc, pay the NI and tax and you're basically busy fools. You're not far away from being better off registering as unemployed.

And what will you do if it rains?

A proper valet will set you back £200+ and it will take 2 people all day to do a car, maybe longer if it's bad. And they usually have a water-proof tent like thing to work under when it rains.

Sorry to be negative, but this plan just doesn't make financial sense.

With regards to insurance, I have again just gone through the Lloyds TSB business insurance questionnaire and answered the question.. Would you require insurance to damage done to customers property whilst working? and it still comes to £15.67 a month.

Financially speaking I can see what you are saying but this is a relatively low financial risk for us, living with parents and intending on running it out of small cars. Hence low overheads. Declaring incomes shouldn't be a problem as we are almost certainly not going to be going over the personal allowance. We are going to be running this over the summer and possibly carry on into next year if we do get customers so I will reassess the business at the end of August.

Even if the business completely fails it will still be a good thing for my CV as I wish to go into Business Management in the future and this experience will be useful either way.

    Thanks for your input

  5. Whats the actual difference between them? Visually I cant tell the difference, the only thing I can think of is the beading effect you get from a rain repellent.. Does the glass polish result in a same sort of finish?

  6. Dont use a water blade, if you get a piece of dirt trapped as you are drying the car you will drag it across your customers car causing a scratch. it may not be an issue with your own car, but a customer could try and claim for the damage from you.

This is very true. In that case I think I will stick to using cloths!

In relation to the claiming for damage comment.. I was looking on a Lloyds TSB Business insurance site earlier and for Car Valeting with £1million public liability insurance it was £15 per month. This may be very useful should someone claim against us for damage that may or may not have been caused by our washing

  7. We have a couple of microfibres along with a chamois and a water blade as well to get the majority of the water off the big panels.

We thought of £20 as a price for the above as we will probably need £3/4 to cover petrol costs of travelling to the clients house.

Luckily we have vacuum and karcher pressure washer already so the only real costs are of the sprays and cloths we need.

  8. Hey guys,

Just a quick question for y'all!

Thinking of setting up a Home valet service with a friend for the summer hols into our gap years. Basically we would go to peoples houses at a time that suited them and provide a base package including a warm wash/wax followed by full chamois/drying. Touching up small scratches as and when with T-Cut or equivalent. We would then apply tyre dressing and bumper polish for plastic trim. We would then use upholstery shampoo/cleaner on the carpets and mats after a full vacuum and polish. Cleaning out the ash tray etc. Finishing up by using window polish on the inside and outside windows & windscreens.

That would be the base package with optional paid extras such as a hand applied wax, autoglym polish, alloy wheel sealant, leather cleaner.

How much would you pay for this service? (if you didn't wash the cars yourselves)

A lot of people have said why aren't we pricing cheaper than the Polish roadside and car park valets but I believe that people would be willing to pay a premium for us to come to their house at a convinient time for them and use high quality products to achieve a high quality finish.

    Any input is appreciated!

    Thanks

  9. Sorry for the thread revival but where is this PCB? If anyone has a guide of how to get to it, would be greatly appreciated!

open up the boot, remove the trim around the top of the car and pull the headlining down a bit.. there is a 22mm bolt (i think) on the bottom of the base amplifier. undo this and unclip the cable and it should slot out the top of the roof

  10. I did my vRS, well, soundkiller did, and it was worth every penny as the car feels much more sedate. That said, that's a derv and the 1.2 isnt all that bad noise wise.

Tyre noise may still be a problem, but it will help loads.

When Ross did the Unit18 Fabia vRS Estate he sound proofed it and it makes a big difference in the driving pleasure :)

How much did your soundproofing come to in the end? I looked at a guide a while back and it looked like a lot of work!

    Cheers

  11. I didn't do any other test after passing. I just had 1 years NCB and my insurance was £1,800. I was with "Bell" if this helps. Fully Comp.

I would suggest you try another company such as Norwich Union. Please do remember not to accept a quote from confused.com ect as they get a %

    - Once you have been on confused.com and get your quotes look on the actual company websites and fill in the forms there. Once done then ring and talk to them over the phone.

    Hope this helps,

    Rob

I did get it through confused.com and then went to the website and it was about £100 cheaper. Unfortunately I have had the policy since Feb and it wouldn't make financial sense to cancel the policy as the difference in price would cancel out. Just got to wait it out til Feb 2010 and I can renew to a different insurer and save some much needed dosh.

  12. I'm 17 and out of curiosity I got a quote on Adrian Flux for a vRS from 05. The cheapest came in at £4600 I think.

As it stands I am paying an extortionate £2100 for a 1.4 MPi at the moment with yesinsurance. I didn't know about Adrian Flux til a few days ago - did a quote and it came out at £1300. Needless to say myself and Dad were slightly annoyed as we now cant get a refund for the existing insurance.

I used to drive a 1.4 02 plate Fiesta Zetec which was much faster than the MPi. Unfortunately that lovely car came to a sticky end and moving into the Fabia I feel much more in control due to the slower and less powerful engine.

In conclusion, unless he takes a test like RoSPA or IAM soon after passing his test I don't reckon the insurance cost would make the vRS a viable decision.

  13. Thought Id pull up this thread rather then make a new one....

Ive got a 1.4 MPi petrol and was mulling over whether to clear it out with some Redex as like Fabia1.4 it seems to struggle up hills and the MPG isnt so good. Just a few questions though:

    1) Anyone ever done this and would recommend it?

    2) If so, which one should I get...as a quick browse of Halfords showed 3 different types for petrol engines. Theres One Shot, Petrol Treatment, Injector Cleaner and Fuel System cleaner. Im confused as to which one I should get if I do try it

I bought the 1 shot fuel system cleaner for

  14. I would have thought that the "search" function would help you on this or some other VAG forums, I'm sure that it has been covered already.

Have searched around and have seen pics of the sensor in situ however not seen how I can actually get to the sensor to start with.. I guess just take the underside dash off near the pedal?

  15. Hey guys,

Got an intermittent fault with my switch at the moment so I want to buy a spare before it totally dies.

My Q is.... Has anyone got a guide/pics of the installation of this little switch?

Got the Part # off Stu's website just need to know how to get the thing in there!

    Cheers in advance

  16. Went here today as I had a suspected coolant leak. The car is under the used warranty and has had other work done with no questions by Hayes in Clacton with no questions asked.

However as soon as I took it into Underwoods I was told I was subject to a £41.40 diagnostic charge to look at the car. 4 hours later I collected the car and was presented with the invoice stating I needed a new Aux Drive belt and a new brake switch and that they couldn't find a problem with the coolant system apart from a corroded pipe which would cost £152 to replace however this wasnt causing the leak.

Now i'm not an expert but I do know that the coolant system is a sealed circuit and that the coolant has to of gone somewhere yet they seem unable to find any leaks.

I then spent 25mins to wait for a rear wiper blade.

Quite unimpressed with the experience to be honest and will definitely not be returning

  17. Haven't actually been but their service department seems jam packed, rang up last week and their nearest available space to see my car was over a week and a half away. They also didn't have any courtesy cars for another week after that.

Not sure if that's seasonal demand or they only have 1 courtesy car but it didn't impress me much.

As a result I'm taking the car to Underwoods in Colchester as they could see my car first thing today!
