  1. Well, its been a long time since I happily sold my Mk1 Fabia vRS SE (it was surprisingly a Friday afternoon job - don't ask!), bringing to end many years of Skoda ownership, which included a Felicia and three Fabias. Since then I've had an Altea (loved it to bits), a VW Caddy (in vRS blue!) and a company car - Honda Civic (reliable, great on fuel, but rather boring).

So, after accepting a new job offer yesterday (this job does not have a car as part of the package), I find myself back in Skoda world! I've bought a lovely little white Fabia Monte Carlo and can't wait to collect him!

Tis good to be back guys, been away faaaaar too long!

  2. Hello

My dad's 63 plate Roomster has just been in for service and they have forgotten to reset the maintenance counter on it, so the spanner is still showing on the dash. I remembered how to switch this off on the older models (ones with a twiddly stick thing under the rev counter), but his has two buttons, one with a picture of some squares on (clock set) and one with'0.0' on it. I've tried Pressing the 0.0 button, switching on ignition, releasing the button the pressing the other one, then switching off and on again (worked on my Caddy that had these buttons), but still the spanner shows up. Any ideas?

    Cheers!

  3. Yeah BIK is a lot lower than if I was given a van, and fuel consumption much better, think it's a no brainer now I've had a couple of days to mull it over. Thanks all of you for your opinions / info on your civic experiences, makes me feel a bit happier knowing more about the vehicle! Will see if I can go for a run in one tomoro at work :-)

  4. Thanks for the info! I had a look round one today and was struck by how much room there is in the back, which is good as I lug around a lot of printers / servers (I'm an IT engineer). It'll also be capable of taking my bikes out at weekends which was a worry if I sold the Caddy. Seems solidly built too compared with one or two jap cars I've had as courtesy cars at work so looking good so far... :-)

  5. I've been given promotion at work and part of the package is a company car. As a life long driver of VAG group cars (and many French vans at work hehehe)I haven't a clue what a Civic would be like. The offer is for a Civic SE 1.6 diesel. I would be looking to sell my VW Caddy (no room on the drive at home for 3 cars, and it only moves once a week), so I would be sacrificing (and saving) a fair amount if I accepted the offer.

Any previous experience of Civics would be great!

    Cheers

  6. I had number 461, convinced a previous owner had bumped it as the front bumper always looked slightly out of alignment. Was amazing on fuel (best was 73mpg on a run through Yorkshire), though it had a fair number of niggles - rear spoiler paint delaminated at 3 years old, radio had a fault with its aerial (worked when it wanted, even after going to the dealer), had the accelerator pedal replaced at 2 1/2 years old as it wouldn't return fully all the time (fun at roundabouts!). Apart from that, was a decent enough little car, I traded it as I needed a bigger vehicle for travelling to cycling events and wanted to put the bike inside etc.

  7. I'm calling out to anyone out there with a current model VW Caddy C20 1.6 TDi - basically I'm wanting to change the air and oil filters on my little Caddy (it had its 20k / 2 year service last year and is still a very long way off the 40k / 4 year service, but does a lot of short trips), and I can see how to do the air one no problem... but where on earth is the oil filter?! I even had my dad have a nosey under the bonnet (he's a retired HGV engineer) and his reply was 'f**k knows'!

I imagine its probably dead easy to find if you know where to look, any help would be greatly appreciated!

  8. As a network engineer, I have very few issues with Win 7 Pro - XP is still good, but its starting to get a bit ropey with some of the corporate networks I work on. I'm agreeing with jrw re network environments - and with Server 2008 and 2011 based networks I find it much easier to deploy and maintain kit on Win7 than the old stager XP! XP still has a place in businesses, a few of our custs have bespoke software packages that haven't been rewritten for 7 for instance. HP can still provide us with XP downgrade disks for the business desktops we sell, but the number of requests for this has dropped dramatically in the last year. Hopefully Win 8 won't mess up the huge improvements 7 saw from Vista, but you never know with Microsoft! :)

  9. Hi!

I had one in 2003 - it permanently sounded like a castanet cabaret act in full swing - think its just noisy tappets, but could be wrong...? If its been like that for years and not got any worse, and seems to be running fine otherwise, its probably just its erm 'natural' noise?!

  10. Yeah the 'other' garage have been great up until the last 2 cars I've had - sales lads are great blokes, just something unfortunate seems to have happened on the service side, which is a shame.

Loving my vRS again - its been a couple of depressing months wondering if it would ever be right again! I've even bought it a new nose badge to celebrate (other one is a bit flaky!)

  11. A big thanks has to go to Border Cars, Glasgow Rd, Dumfries - they fixed my lovely Fabia vRS SE after MONTHS of being arsed about by the Skoda dealer in the same area (I've already left a 'review' on the dealer page, so no need to name and shame yet again!)

I got my lovely vRS SE from David Kirkwood (lovely Skoda salaes manager bloke, used to be in charge of the aforementioned Skoda dealer) at Border Cars in October last year. It started to play up around January, so rather be safe than sorry got it booked into the Skoda dealer to be checked under warranty... After 3 attempts at the Skoda dealer to get them to believe my car had an intermittent high idling issue, and various things being done (1st time "keep an eye on it, it seems fine here", 2nd time "It seems ok but if it does it again we'll replace the EGR valve", 3rd time "we didn't need to replace the valve, just gave it a clean"), the car then went out of warranty, still with the fault...

I remembered when I bought the car I had been given a 1 year warranty from Border Cars (standard on their 2nd hand cars it would seem!), so contacted David and asked his advice (was sick of trailing back and forth to other garage by this time)... I booked it in, they had it 2 days, diagnosed a faulty throttle pedal, ordered it in and replaced it all under warranty - no fuss or anything!

For the first time in months, my car is back running properly, I can't thank them enough!!!

  12. An update from my post from a few years ago above:

John and Richard the sales lads are superb - friendly and helpful! Would defo still buy vehicles there without question!

I've had 3 cars from here (4th Fabia came from Border Cars Dumfries as their wonderful ex sales manager David Kirkwood moved there, and also cos it was an SE I wanted and they had one!).

Had no problems purchasing, and the servicing / aftersales was second to none on first 2 cars (Felicia GLi and Fabia Comfort)......then it all went a wee bit wrong on car 3, and horrendously on car 4!

3rd car (Mk1 Fabia Sport) had door seals re-done - one had to be re-done 3 times before it stopped leaking. I then had a warranty claim in for the spoiler fading (from bright yellow to dull)... 6 weeks of coming and going and excuses from the warranty guy. I had to go higher up to get an answer as to what was happening, then they put the wrong spoiler on it (vRS not Sport), without mentioning it to me... wouldn't have actually minded if they had told me, but nevermind...

4th car (present vehicle) Fabia vRS SE - took it in for a new aerial wiring under warranty - they damaged the dash getting radio out, then left radio sticking a good bit out on one side. They also ordered wrong coloured repeater indicator - or rather they said it had been ordered, then when I went to get it fitted (I live 35 miles away) they said 'oh oops this is the only one in stock'. I complained twice about high idling issues - first time I was told it didn't have a problem and if it came back it needed an EGR valve. Next time it was mentioned to them (3 weeks ago) the person on the service desk told me to get it booked in for the valve to be replaced, and when it went in, all they did was CLEAN the valve. The car has now gone out of warranty (last week) still with the fault, but I have 6 months left on extended warranty with Border Cars, so it is going there to be repaired, as I cannot face going back there. I had no apology for any of the above on the vRS and it left me very upset.

To sum up - Sales: - spot on, first class service Richard and John are a credit to the dealership, Service: - as it stands presently, I wouldn't trust them to work on my wheelbarrow, which is a shame as it used to be a good garage all round!

  13. and I may see if me and swmbo can book in the pub one night when the levellers are playing ;)

I know I saw that! Should be pretty cool! Tho if we go back I doubt I'll being having 'Just The One'! (Levellers joke... don't ask!)
