  1. Remember if you're on free wifi, even if it's encrypted, probably everyone else one the access point could read your internet traffic.

Very much so its a case of ease of use VS security and unfortunately security took the nose dive in the equation.

for those who are a little less initiated than some of us this video does a good job of explaining

  2. The wide adoption of HTTPS is primarily due to the fact that public wifi hotspots have massively increased everywhere you go, fast food places, Coffee Shops, Supermarkets everywhere you see a sign that says "logon to our FREE public wifi"

Most of these solutions are completely insecure in that there is no encryption between the base station and the wireless device, at most it may have some kind of logon page, that requires the companies "wifi password" that you present to a webpage that adds your wireless MAC to an ACL, again no encryption.

So to help try and secure their users data as its a massive pain in the arse for companies to keep resetting hijacked account passwords or investigating to return ownership to the right users, companies are enforcing HTTPS so even though the connection to the internet is insecure the connection for the session to their server is. With modern CPU's while the initial HTTPS session takes a little longer to establish with the site, the overhead isn't significant at all.

  3. Sorry read it as GB, jesus 500mb drive......how old is this pc?

I'm assuming its going to be some ancient pentium must be 15 years old + ?

There used to be a utility called EZ-Drive that would help get around the LBA addressing limitation.

This guy here has a load of small old HDD's that should do the trick something like a connor

  4. Yes it's prism.  It's the clue you're a target, so best disconnect from the web and go off grid Nick.

I think is is the short version of Waplord's advice?

Yes aside from the final bit of advice as the best way to go off grid is to park your car in the garage with the engine running, put a length of hose on the exhaust and through the drivers window, as you breath in the fumes it will mask the iron in your body preventing any satellite tracking while you make your escape

  5. It's a decent app for helping locate your lost phone. But useless if it's stolen.

My mrs lost her iPhone 5 at Drayton manor, I tracked it on my phone but the person who had taken it must have switched it straight off.

Factory reset using iTunes and they have a new phone passcode or no passcode.

like i said before its not that case with ios7 now, even if the phone is wiped in DFU mode it requires the apple account to reactivate the handset or it'll keep reporting in on the same find my iphone details

  6. Yes mob justice ALWAYS works well

Self-styled vigilantes attacked the home of a hospital paediatrician after apparently confusing her professional title with the word "paedophile", it emerged yesterday.

Dr Yvette Cloete, a specialist registrar in paediatric medicine at the Royal Gwent hospital in Newport, was forced to flee her house after vandals daubed it with graffiti in the middle of the night.

The word "paedo" was written across the front porch and door of the house she shared with her brother in the village of St Brides, south Wales.

Dr Cloete, 42, confirmed she had left the property after the "distressing" attack. "For the time being I have moved out of the area because when something like this happens you just cannot feel safe in your own home.

"We removed the graffiti within hours, but what happened was terrible and it has been extremely distressing."

Gwent police confirmed that the attack last Friday night was prompted by a confusion over the words "paedophile" and "paediatrician".

Inspector Andrew Adams said: "It appears to be the case. We are still making inquiries. We want to stress in the strongest possible terms that there is nothing to justify what was written on the walls and door of Dr Cloete's home."

He said every effort was being made to find the people responsible for the attack. "These people should think long and hard about what they have done to a valuable member of the community, who has devoted her life to helping children.

"We are concerned that some people in the local community have taken it upon themselves to do this, and would urge them to think about the consequences of their inaccurate and inappropriate actions."

The Royal Gwent hospital described Dr Cloete as a top-class specialist in children's diseases. A spokesman said: " She is a valued and respected member of the paediatric team, where she has worked for the last two and a half years."

A neighbour of the doctor and her brother said: "They are decent people who we get on very well with. It is very unfortunate that something like this has happened."

Dr Cloete is the latest victim to have been wrongly identified by anti-paedophile campaigners in the wave of protests which have swept the country following the News of the World's campaign to "name and shame" alleged sex offenders.

Five families who were wrongly identified as harbouring sex offenders were forced to flee their homes in the Paulsgrove estate in Portsmouth as violence flared earlier this month.

The Sunday tabloid wants the government to introduce a law allowing people access to information on the identities and addresses of paedophiles in their areas.

  7. Sadly, there are ways around everything - Apple have made this easier than most for stolen/lost phones.

We found this out at work when getting phone come back to us in the IT department after people had left and not left their lock codes with the phone. Takes about 10 mins to get back into the phone as long as you don't mind losing the data (which if your phone goes walkies they won't).

IOS7 prevents the phones activation if wiped, even in DFU without the account credentials "find my iphone" was setup with

  8. Due to my job i am required to be "Technology Agnostic" so i try to keep myself thinking that way, i made my choice as being an iPhone which i deemed to be the best fit for me at the time, i certainly don't think it's the best and i certainly don't think its the worst, in fact i don't think of any handset as being the best, each o/s and model doing some things better than others and some things worse.

you could make a massive list of all the phones on the market highlighting what was a plus and minus for you to make your choice that way if you wanted.

Can this thread be locked please.

It's just a waste of time now, like every other mobile phone thread on here.

I agree with this totally every phone thread on here ends up turning into this, however what i do find strange is that we all respect (or try to) each others car choices without flippant claims and mocking them, so why does it extend to phones constantly?

  9.  it actually works with Mercedes bluetooth,

Strange it worked fine on the Audi, BMW and Merc i test drove earlier this year flawlessly

you have to use that bloody i-tunes

and do you know what the benefit of using itunes is? what purpose it serves rather than just dumping a load of mp3 files on raw storage at the media player its connected to? im sure an "expert" on all things such as yourself can tell us

Apple exists to make as much money from the users as possible.

and of course Samsung, Microsoft, HTC and every other company are creating technology for purely charitable reasons aren't they, with no intentions of making money

Quite frankly the ill informed dross you've posted is barely worth my time responding to, you go play with the other kids sunshine and the rest of us who don't have the mentality of a 14 year old fanboi will get along fine.

  10. I think my biggest issue with the MK3 and why i've not stuck with the brand is it's just more of the same and didn't really wow me but that i feel is true of all the cars in the VAG group at present they are all very similar sharing the parts bins etc, i feel they're playing it safe with the Mk3 VRS. Don't get me wrong is a fine car but i wouldn't say its an exceptional car with anything that makes it a must have for me im afraid.
