    If you change the setting 'manually' from day to night or vice versa you take it out of the automatic setting. To reset it to automatic you go to Setup, Display and choose Automatic rather than day or night.
    As stated above it will then follow your headlights so that when the light sensor (with the rain sensor in front of the rear-view mirror) detects low light, the headlights will come on and the Columbus display will change to night mode.
    Even then you'll find that with a strong backlight (eg. with the sun behind you) the headlights will come on and screen change to night mode. I'm sure the sensitivity of the sensor could be changed by someone with a VCDS tool.
