Columbus Day/Night Settings

Featured Replies

What determines whether or not you get the bright or dark screen? On a journey mine changes from time to time for no apparent reason. I assumed it might be the level of ambient light and an over sensitive sensor - but last night it was on the daylight or bright) setting in pitch blackness!

PS. First time I had had the headlamps on main beam and people in France rang to say I was disturbing their sleep! ;)

Day/night setting is linked to the headlights. If you have auto headlights set and they turn on then the screen goes to night mode and vice versa. There's also the screen dimming function which is controlled by the light sensor on the Columbus. The sensor is at the top right hand side (you probably haven't noticed it) and this changes the intensity of the screen brightness according to the light level.

Mine must be faulty then as the headlamps are on auto - but the screen stayed on the daylight setting. :(

Two different sensors so it can and does happen that your lights are on but the screen may be on "day time"

Not too sure what you mean - and how do I sort it out - please?

I was under the impression that the sensors serve different purposes.

There is a light sensor on the front which adjusts the display brightness based on the current ambient light.

The actual switching between day and night mode is based on the headlight switch position. I left mine in night mode 90% of the time as I found it was always annoyingly visible out of the corner of my eye.

If you change the setting 'manually' from day to night or vice versa you take it out of the automatic setting. To reset it to automatic you go to Setup, Display and choose Automatic rather than day or night.

As stated above it will then follow your headlights so that when the light sensor (with the rain sensor in front of the rear-view mirror) detects low light, the headlights will come on and the Columbus display will change to night mode.

Even then you'll find that with a strong backlight (eg. with the sun behind you) the headlights will come on and screen change to night mode. I'm sure the sensitivity of the sensor could be changed by someone with a VCDS tool.

Thanks - I'll check that setting!
