  1. Ok - I am posting this as my final post (at least for a while)

Some background, several years ago a very close friend of mine died due to the actions of a drink driver and I guess some wounds are slow to heal, so as you can guess drink drivers are not exactly top of my xmas card list. Secondly due to a long standing medical condition I do not drink alcohol and haven't for a long time. So for someone to make a post on this thread making (albeit maybe in jest(?)) the accusation of me being a drink driver touched a nerve - possibly I over-reacted possibly not.

Additionally, like several people on this forum I am tired of threads being derailed and posters being almost belittled at times because they have asked a question which has been asked before/is answered elsewhere/is in the manual/is considered boring - delete as applicable. I sometimes wonder what some new poster think of the responses.

    @Damo

Thanks for your responses - I did ask for my account to be removed - you suggested I think it over and take a break from here, possibly a wise suggestion. I will take this advice for now so you can leave my account as is whilst I stay away for a while, I will let you know if decide to have the account deleted. To all those helpful and friendly posters - thanks.

  2. Never, ever Drink & Drive

As a Postman I'm completely ****ed off most Saturday morning by home owners cars abandoned like they've been stolen, front doors swinging in the brezze and keys left in doors and whilst, the car lights being left on are more subtle they are all signs of Drink & Drive.

    Regards

    T

What a strange post (if it is humour it is a strange kind)

Think I've just about had enough of some of the attitudes on this forum lately(and this thread  sums them up nicely) . I am not going to bother posting here for a while - might not even bother reading it either. Goodbye

  3. Maybe - but surely there are times when you park up at night and get out the car and forget to turn off the lights *shurgs*, I know I have  - that is where the warning beep can be useful (and the mk 2 certainly had this). That is what the OP is getting at.

    Neily03

I need to check the side light issue mentioned earlier  - could be the case but without checking I can't be sure.

  4. Sorry if this has already been posted.

I am constantly driving around the day with my main headlights on, I've noticed that the beeping sound to let you know you've left your lights on when you open the door is very random.

Sometimes it sounds but most of the time it doesn't.

So next day in daylight the lights are on.

Is this just my octavia mk3 or others too!

    Cheers

Mine too - my previous mk2 always beeped when the lights were on and I turned off the ignition but on the new one it seems to only beep sometimes, does not bother me too much but does seem odd.

  5. I have the 1.4TSI manual - which I run in normal (not eco mode) and I would say on my average commute (9 miles mostly 30mph urban - with one short 40mph section, just avoiding rush hour) - I getting an indicated 40+mpg - best around 45 usually around 40.

Visited my folks recently so on a longer trip - 25 miles a mix of urban and rural (40 or 50mph limits) on a quiet day over xmas I got indicated 51mpg - and this was with fairly average driving. And this is without really using the stop/start or other fuel saving tricks. So more care could have returned closer to 55 I would think but pushing the engine does cause the mpg to drop noticably if the turbo is working hard.

I am very happy with both the performance and the economy of the 1.4 engine - most of the time it performs quietly and smoothly but there is always that reserve of performance available if needed.

  6. Hard to be sure why it is not working but what I did was copy the graphic to the box on tag scanner for each track (i know it means that the files are a bit bigger but space is cheap, it takes longer too but you can do multiple selections in tag scanner to speed things up) - I actually just got the image files from the internet - search under the artist etc just copy and paste into the image box on tag scanner.

What you have to do in tag scanner is click the save button (if you exit of click off the track it won't save) it should then save the image file as part of the header for each track - so however you use the track then(album folder/playlist etc) it should always display the artwork.

  7. Quite simple for me - had a mk2 octy for 7 years from new - happy with it, did everything I wanted but was getting to the stage were it would start needing some expensive work doing plus the age thought I would change it. Given the excellent service form the previous octy I decided to look at a like for like replacement - well almost, I seriously considered the mk2 scout but once I found out the new model was due I decided to look into that instead.

Ended up with the 1.4tsi SE -does everything the previous model did but better - if it turns out to be a reliable then I will be a happy driver.

  8. I have the 1.4 TSI and it is a very quiet engine - on the motorway at 70 in 6th gear you can barely hear the engine (I can't be sure what the rev is as I have never taken much notice probably no more that 2k)  - in fact it is very easy to find yourself getting well above 70 mph because there is so little engine noise so it all too easy to speed up due to the lack of engine noise feedback.

I think is an excellent engine - the performance is brisk (actually quick) without any drama , economy is excellent and all very smooth.

  9. Personaly I think I would write to the dealership and copy in Skoda outlining the issues and what you think has been agreed (dropping in that you are thinking of taking legal advice which I think you should) and requesting them to give you a firm offer of what they intend to do in writing. Only then should you make a decision because if it is all verbal it would very easy for, shall we say, misunderstandings to happen. I would not agree anything unless there is a clear record of it (written or email).

Perhaps you could contact something like the WhatCar helpline - they seem to get some decent results for people too.

  10. I wouldn't be sad to buy and use a Tom Tom or similar instead of a built-in sat-nav system.

OK it doesn't look so smart and trendy BUT

    - it is 1/10 the cost

    - it is easier/cheaper to update

    - it is easier/cheaper to repair/replace

    - you can choose which model you buy, with the particular features you may like / want / need / prefer

    - electronic devices are getting better / cheaper / smarter all the time.  You will be stuck with a built-in one; a far cheaper third-party one can easily and cheaply be replaced / updated in future years

    - a dashboard-top-mounted removeable one is nearer you eye-line and far easier to see safely.

The only advantage I can think of with the ludicrously over-priced built-in ones is that, apart from looking neater, they are hard to steal

That is exactly why I was happy to go for the SE spec - the built in sat nav for all it's neatness does have some draw backs - plus I already had a sat nav anyway! Plus having a smartphone gives me another sat nav option as well so a built in one seemed like overkill.

I wonder how much Skoda will charge for updates once the free period has elapsed - my Garmin has free map updates for life plus free traffic updates - the only additional item to pay for is the traffic camera.

  11. Bet the system doens't help with those very polite people who if you let them out or through a gap in front of you wait until they are about three feet away and then flash you briefly with main beam thereby blinding you (vans/minibuses/4x4 are the worst as their headlights are just nicely at eye level) - yeah a great way of saying thanks - leaving you dazzled/blinded.(sorry pet hate of mine)

  12. I am just filling up a 32Gb card - the way I have gone is artist/cd folders so I can play individual albums if I wish but I have created a folder called playlists - in this I will create playlists (simple text files) which I can select to play various selections from different CDs.

The playlists are text files named title.M3U  (the filename cannot be somethin.txt as the system will not realise it is a playlist) and each file is just a simple text file listing the tracks to play in order - something like

    example.m3u

    \\artist 1\track 1.mp3

    \\artist 3\track 4.mp3

    \\artist 7\track 1.mps

    etc

the \\   tells the system to go from the root directory of the card to the appropriate artist directory and the track file name.

The only downside is that unless you have the album art saved to each track (something I did with tagscanner software - a freebie tag editor, still took ages though but once done..) then you will not get the album art showing when using a playlist.

  13. Another problem: I managed to pair the mobile phone, which is a NOKIA Lumia, but the car doesn't upload the contacts list, hence it doesn't show on the screen who calls, just the number, as if unknown.

Can I manually add some of the contacts to the car phone book?

Strange - I have a Nokia Lumia (520) and as soon as I paired it it imported the contacts list and I was able to set up my main contacts as favourites with no issues at all on my Bolero unit, have you tried deleting the pairing and re-pairing?

You could try a factory reset on the info unit (it is a menu option in setup) but this will delete any other settings you have changed/amended so might be a last resort.

  14. A couple of times I have had the display unit come on but does not show the mpg/trip details even the long term and since refuelling figures are blank - the display is there but just the figures are missing, happened again this morning. Strangely if the car is then parked and the engine off for a few minutes on restart everything is back to normal. Weird.

  15. re both wing mirrors moving - I am pretty sure this is an option in the vehicle setup menu - one option is sync mirrors so that they both move  at the same  (?)

    or am I missing something......

So far no major issues - the steering column clunks slightly over large bumps (sound like the clamp for the adjuster),the handbrake position takes some getting used to - bad idea for me - surely it would not have cost that much to move.
