  1. I started a wheel refurbishment business 6 years ago. Started out doing mobile repairs, As someone has already mentioned with a mobile service the key to a good repair is prep work. However you will find that this type of repair will chip easily. I now only offer a complete wheel refurbishment, the full process can be found here http://www.mintalloys.co.uk/full-alloy-refurbishment-process.html . We use Powder coat primers, wet paint for the base coat and finally an acrylic powder coat lacquer. This will give the most durable and longer lasting finish. Hope this expalins the difference. 2. Please don't tar us all with the same brush, I have been doing wheel refurbs for 5 years, I don't do touch ups, I use 2k primers, quality paints and most importantly a quality lacquer. I spent ££££'s building a van that provides an enclosed spray booth, oven and filtration for the fumes/overspray, air dryers and filters to ensure I have clean dry compressed air to spray with. The smart repairers that work out of small vans are the touch up kings. My website has a list of questions you should ask to determine whether you're going to get a touch up merchant or someone who knows how to do a quality long lasting repair. I agree that some wheels are better off having a full refurb done, most of the cars I work on are under 3 years old and dont need a full refurb , If I feel that a wheel would be better off having a full refurb I will explain this to the customer, If the customer insists on a mobile repair then I decline the work as my long term reputation is more important than doing my best and not achieving the high standards I set. I hope this has cleared up the difference between a smart repairer and an Alloy wheel refurbishment service.
  3. depending on where you are based you could try Spit and Polish in Tonbridge, BJV engineering in Hemel, Pristine wheels in Woburn and the wheel specialist who have various locations. You will find that these outfits will only give a 6 month warranty on diamond cut wheels. The problem with diamond cut wheels is getting the lacquer to adhere to a shiny unkeyed surface. If i were you I would look at getting the wheels stripped and then powder coated this type of repair will last a lot longer. I always recommend this to all my customers who have diamond cut wheels. To date I have had no comebacks.
  4. If your in Hemel try Max Powder, ask to speak to Kirk and tell him Andy from Mint Alloys sent you http://www.maxpowderalloys.co.uk/. I use him for the wheels that are beyond what a mobile service can do
  5. I refurb wheels for a living http://www.mintalloys.co.uk/ Depending on the age and style of wheel it will either be Deutsche silver or sports 1, don't forget that if you go down to bare alloy you'll need an etch primer. If its sports one you will need to do a base coat of very fine first as sports 1 doesn't cover very well. To be honest don't bother with the aerosols from halfords etc You'd be better off getting them done professionally trust me I have seen so many wheels that have been diy'd and they look awful not because the owner has done a bad job its just the products used.
  6. Yes, local company done them for £150 for all glass
  7. Well It finally arrived , very pleased with it, SO glad I went the petrol route
  8. Phoned Skoda Uk, told the offer was for swapping customers out of Diesel and into petrol's (as posted above). Explained that I felt I was now paying a £1000 to much for my petrol car and was not best pleased. The response was still No, you wont get the £1000.
  9. I ordered my pertrol Vrs back in August, will be picking it up on Friday. Will have to try and see if I can get the extra £1000.
  10. Ordered Our Petrol VRS back in Aug, was given a build date of week 46, then week 49, have just been told its now week 1. Thinking of cancelling my order, Think I could deal with the long wait if I was buying a Porsche but not a Skoda.
  11. Ordered our 20T VRS on Saturday, Just been told its scheduled build date is week 47.
  12. Drove a DSG today and didnt like it so went for the manual.
  13. Deal done, I should be the proud owner of the following hopefully before Christmas 2.0TFSI manual Candy white auto dimming xenon heated seats floor mats reversing sensors Mdi Maxi dot space saver Cant wait
  14. Off to the dealer tomorrow to hopefully place our order, Think I'm going for a white one, I will be getting the wheels done in Gloss Black. Looking at all the posts about delivery times I should get it for March 1st
  15. Think That's the way I'm going (98% certain) just trying to decide on a colour
  16. I am undecided about which colour to go for, Our current car is in Ford Performance blue which is very similar to the race blue which is my wife's current choice. Can anyone post a picture of a White and a Red vrs hatch as I need something to try and tempt the wife away from another blue car. The brochure colour swatch is useless. Thanks
  17. Have to admit I am/was a bit of a petrol head I used to do loads of track days, raced Caterhams for 2 years and a Bmw 320 for 1 year but had to give it up as I had New born daughter and also started my own business. I always had a Diesel company car and the wife had a Clio 182 Cup which I always drove at the weekends. We bought the Diesel ST Mondeo as our new family car but with time I drove it less and less and just let the wife do the driving. I just found it dull to drive (handles ok) with a narrow torque curve which always seemed to be all or nothing, My wife used to laugh at me as I could never make swift and smooth progress i just assumed I'd lost the knack to drive quickly (where safe to do so) Maybe I can find my mojo again with a petrol, that would please the wife looks like I can pick up a Race blue FSI with auto dimming lights,Floor mats,Heated seats, Maxidot, space saver, and front and rear parking sensors for £16874.25 and £17812.95 for the same car with DSG (drive the deal) will use this to negotiate with the sales person on Saturday
  18. Thanks for all the replies, I have arranged a drive in a 160bhp DSG Octavia as they don't have a 200BHP car available, am thinking more along the manual route at present but will see how the test drive goes
  19. Try Paul at Spectrum http://www.spectrum-glasgow.co.uk/aboutus.html, Tell him Mr Wheels gave you his details, he should be able to sort this for you
  20. Thanks for the reply, I do around 12-15K miles a year, just after some real world MPG figures as i find the ones quoted in the brochures are always way off
  21. I have decided to go for a new Vrs but can't decide on which engine and gearbox to go for. I currently drive a diesel Mondeo St but find the power band very narrow and find it difficult to drive smoothly, I find myself in the wrong gear for swift driving in to and away from roundabouts etc (no Im not a boy racer) I fancy the 2.0T FSI DSG. What are the real world MPG figures for this engine fitted with the DSG box. If i go the diesel route does the DSG gearbox suit a diesel engine. one final question is about which one would be the best bet from a re sale point of view. Thanks Andy
  22. Hi, Just about to take the plunge and buy a new Octavia VRs, currently drive a 06/55 plate Mondeo ST 155. looked at many different cars BMW 320, Merc C class, Alfa 159 as well as another Mondeo Titanium X sport (all used ) wasn't till I went to the local Skoda dealer to look at a late used Octavia (just from an interest point of view, never really thought about owning one). The sales lady explained the current VAT free deals which made the car very good value, I was even more surprised by how the VRS diesel drove. So I am just about to place an order
