  1. I am now on my 6th Skoda. Three Fabia 1.9 Tdi estates , two Yeti 140 se 4x4 and now an Octavia Elegance tdi 150 4x4 estate and strangely I find that I am using my 7 year old Suzuki Swift 1.3 DDi  more and more - no flashing lights , no worries about regens ,screens upon screens of info  and options, all these things that seem to be of so much concern to most posters ( including me) are not an issue- turn the key- it starts - and gets you where you want to go cheaply, totally reliably and reasonably comfortably. Are Skoda losing the plot ?.

totally agree...and not limited to Skoda.  Have been doing similar to with Mrs GH's 100k mile Honda Jazz - dead simple, ABS and FI as complex as it gets.  Dependable technology that you can get your head around....and it just works.

Don't get me wrong - I like some of the tech stuff on my Occy but some of it is just there for the sake of it (voice control?  WTF?) but both my last Superb and this Occy have little electronic induced fits every now and again.

.....and don't get me started on the same subject applied to motorcycles....the sheer joy of riding what is simply a  motorised bicycle is being sucked out of them by electronic this and that......multi map switchable riding modes (I thought that was what the throttle was for), electronic suspension control, multi-mode traction control, gyro assisted ABS, anti-wheelie control, electric screen height adjustment, audio and iphone interfaces....the list goes on.......all adding weight and complexity that moves the rider further and further away from the pureness (and fear!) of getting the best out of two wheels and an engine.

    Rant over.

  2. A proof I am not crazy!

Same here, Petrol vRS. Bugs me to no end on motorway drives, or for any straight line haul for that matter. It is as if when you take an electric motor and try to turn it, it is not smooth rotation but staggering between magnets. Exactly the same feel i get from the wheel. As if you can feel the electric motor turning...

    Wierd as hell.

    Exactly!!

Better than my "feels like a speedboat" description.

  3. Fitted with Bridgestones....done just over 5k no signs of uneven wear and are at the right pressure.

Feeling is similar to driving a speedboat (I'm exaggerating but it's the closest thing I can relate to).....ie you need to constantly correct and this feels "notchy" when doing so. Almost as if the electronics can't quite decide where straight ahead is. Apart from the straight ahead issue steering is fine (in all modes) in all other respects. I think I'll pay a visit to dealer to get checked out

Thanks for tip on noise gen...will see if dealer will oblige at first service.

  4. Spent Christmas week in Holland and took the vRS.  Covered about a 1000 miles in dry/rain/snow/ice with temp ranging from +13c to -7c.

    Good bits

    Fast/relaxed/refined cruising

    Mega lights.

    Mega brakes.

Coped well with 4 adults and about 200kg of luggage plus full tank etc.  Blunts the top gear roll on.....but not by much.

Boot capacity!  Took luggage/coats (inc skiing jackets/salopes) for 4 adults + a load of food (stocked up in Bolougne with French goodies) + a load of christmas presents + assorted self catering stuff (slow cooker/xmas tree and lights....).

    43mpg (75-90mph cruise on mways)

Heating and airco coped very well with conditions - always comfortable and no steamed up windows.

    USB worked well for sounds!

    Bad bits

Steering seemed very notchy at straight ahead position - physically noticeable - more so on Dutch mways (smoother than UK by a long way) - less noticable on UK mways (masked by bad surface?).  VERY annoying!  Same problem in all drive modes. Lane assist off.  DO THEY ALL DO THIS?

Noise generator drones on in sport mode.  Use sport mode often at busy points on mway (ie Antwerp ring) for more "instant" go.  Why is this not switchable?

  5. I've now covered 2500 miles in my TDI VRS Estate.  Had run a Superb 170 Elegance Estate prior to the VRS.  Some observations:-

    - Quieter and smoother than the Superb - I think this is just  sign of it being a generation younger than the Superb.

    - Quality feels better - upper dash far better than the Superb.

    - Std radio/infotainment thingy is OK when cranked up but a bit tinny at low volumes.

    - Much quicker in the mid-range and top end......but can feel a bit sluggish from a standstill (engine mapping difference?)

    - Far more agile than the Superb

    - Nowhere near as much kit as the Superb as std (but I knew this...).

    - Lacks the rear legroom of the Superb but still better than most of its rivals.

    - Stunning brakes - not yet found their limit by triggering ABS.

    - Great lights.

    - Getting 43mpg long term avg - about the same as  I got from Superb - I'm happy with that, given my driving style.

    - Is a great car for going fast, slowly - ie easy torque, instant go, massive mid-range (4th gear 50-80 is a hoot)....without having to thrash it.

    - slightly over geared in 6th - doesn't get in to its stride in top gear roll-ons until 80mph+.  Makes for good Mway cruising but you need 5th when going for a gap when doing 60ish.

So far I'm very happy - would have preferred the TSI engine for a bit more top end zing but company car policy doesn't allow for petrol engines.

  6. As a non vRS mk3 owner having come from a Mk2 vRS can say the Mk3 is a great car in many ways but is dishwater dull when youre used to driving around in something semi sporty.

I went 2.0 TDi Elegance primarily to spare my wife and kids the woes of overfirm VAG sports suspension again, also the 150 really isnt a great deal slower than the vRS TDi. But....whilst it drives v well and is confortable and well equipped it has absolutely no soul....driving it makes me feel about 10 years older than I am.

Im making it sound terrible...its not at all just I would advise anyone looking to trade to a regular Mk3 from a vRS to think twice about it.

Annoyingly am now in the position where I could tomorrow order a company Mk7 Golf GTD 5 door but ive done my nuts on the Mk3 in depreciationand dont think i can justify ridding of it for a good 9-12 months or so.

On the subject of motorbikes agree I love the things and wish id gone and done my licence and had a play years ago.....though I dont doubt if I had i'd no longer be here writing this post. Bikes with the performance offered nowadays (given that the best 600's are barely slower than 1000's from not too many years ago) just dont really have a place on UK roads particularly if you're an honest person who sticks within the confines of the speed limits....very few people do on sports bikes as its nigh on impossible to.

A good mate about a year ago bought a 2013 model year ZX10-R....optional akropovic exhaust its pushing not far shy of 210hp....on something weighing about 195kg!! It is obscenely fast and deadly weapon is not the word for it.....in the right circumstances imagine its a hoot but how can you make use of that performance and enjoy it on the road...its nigh on impossible in my eyes unless youre happy to break every legal limit all the time...and probably eventually kill yourself and others whilst doing so.

Enjoying my VRS TDI - would have preferred petrol but its co car policy.

Your words on bikes make interesting reading.  I've been riding the the bloody things since I was 16 (I'm now just past 50) and they are an affliction that is very difficult to cure - as addictive as heroin but far deadlier.  I recently sold my 955 Daytona (owned it for 7 years, not cutting edge sports bike by any means but still 147bhp in a 220kg machine) as I found myself doing stupid speeds very quickly more and more often (with 0-100 in 6.5 sec very easy to do) and just didn't have the self control to stop (too much fun).   i think over time you become de-sensitised to speed and risk.

Have since bought a BMW R1150R - simple, air cooled and only 85bhp (still good for 0-60 in 4sec though) - this has proven to be a wise move - most of the motorbiking fun but with much reduced risk....I'm a much happier and safer rider as a result.  There are times where too much is just too much and in this country (given current traffic and legal environment) you can find yourself on the other side of what is safe, morally acceptable and legal very very quickly.

  7. I hit a badger whilst doing about 70 mph in a V70 D5 Volvo estate one night........I'd swear that the car actually left the ground!

Stopped, expecting to see a dead badger, but bloody thing nowhere to be seen.  Car needed new bumper, apron, radiator, grill etc - right mess.

  8. The stop/start will happen within a couple of metres of starting the engine (should you drive a bit then stop).  Engine cold or hot makes no difference to whether it works or not, it's only during a DPF regen that it won't auto stop.

Mine only starts working when warm - usually within 1.5 miles

  9. Quite surprised that it doesn't automatically change when the clocks go forward/back. My 2007 Honda Civic did that faultlessly.

I've had CRV's and Accords - all of them re-set automatically (including advancing an hour when driving off the tunnel at Calais).

As a general observation - Jap auto electronics seem to be more reliable, consistent and intuitive compared to German stuff (satnav instructions and useage far easier on the Honda).

  11. similar to mine - does an active re-gen about every 150 miles at moment.  Mostly driven on short journeys so far - first distance at weekend - will see how it performs.

Regen sets tick over to 1000rpm and stop/start is deactivated.  takes about 10 mins to run.

I've just assumed thats how it works.  Better than my previous Superb  - that used to really smell of burning oil (even after many visits to dealer), VRS just smells "hot".

  12. vRS arrived today - I'm impressed!

Some early feedback (bear in mind I'm moving from a Superb Combi 170 elegance):-

Vrs feels more refined than Superb (maybe because Superb covered 70k miles).

Ride quality is better in vRS - a real shock as I was expecting it to be worse! Both on 18's.

Very quite on regular roads and Tarmac .....abit noisier on rough m way Tarmac

Feels like it's better screwed together.

Covers ground deceptively rapidly - combo of plenty of torque and nimble handling? Similar in character to my R1150R!

Not a lot of difference in space in front and boot. Loose a bit of leg room in rear.......but I guess nothing short of an s class can compete with rear leg room of Superb.

Can't hear the noise generator thingy - don't know if it's fitted or not.

Sports mode just tightens up the steering and throttle response ......."normal" seems to cover most of my needs!

Race blue looks good.......but I think rally green is more "stand out".

Seats comfy - covered about 150 miles so far.

Not missed the various gadgets on the Superb so far.....electric heated seats, Columbus sat nav, leather etc

    More later....
